\ TO CENTRAL \
I very much enjoyed my visit to the Amsterdam Bicycle Club on a Tuesday night in November when the weekly songwriters-in-the-round ABC Songwriters Circle show hosted there by Robert Pelletier featured three very accomplished performers.
In addition to enjoying the tunes of the participants, who, in addition to the host included Gary Edward Allen, Tim Preuter and Jody H. Ferrer, I was quite captivated by some of the stories behind how the sons they were sharing came to be written. It’s not all that unusual to have a bit of conversation by artists in between numbers at such gatherings, but with Pelletier at the helm that aspect of the show almost seemed to take on the dimensions of a talk show worthy of broadcast on any network. There was interesting interaction between all four of those on stage and listening to them chat inspired some true insights into my own creative activity.
I’d expect that tonight, when the series returns after a three-week holiday break, this week’s 9-12 edition will be particularly fascinating, since in addition to Pelletier at least one of the participants is a composer with many tales to tell indeed.
David Storey lives up to his name’s homonym in many of his musical creations, as I’ve described previously on several occasions, most recently in September of 2016 when he was preparing to head out B.C. for work on a new film project, putting music aside for a while after just starting to get back into it as a full-time focus back in early 2013.
During the three-and-a-half years while he was concentrating on writing and performing in TO Storey also, of course, released his brilliant Coming Home debut full-length album in mid-2015, as we described at the time. Now he’s back in Ontario and happily has resumed fairly regular performing and visits to open stages. Hopefully he’s also working on another disc.
There’s no cover for the series and I also should add that I was delightfully surprised at the very reasonable cost of my beverage considering where the club is located in the toney tourist district downtown at 54 The Esplanade, and I found the service was quite pleasant and the room very welcoming.
