\ TO WEST \
Two months shy of eleven years as a staple of the west-TO live music scene, the Tuesday night jam at Axis Gallery & Grill on Dundas St. West in the Junction area has been cancelled by the club, apparently due to conflicts between the hosting band and regular customers.
Started by Derek Downham on July 5 in 2005 [as reported in to-nite 349 —and as paid subscribers who are website members can read in our Vault section] the jam has been a crucible for up and coming performers not only from the area but from across the city. As previously reported, it’s where we first heard then Country Roots/now Blues songwriter Samantha Martin perform, along with many other talents large and small, enduring and ephemeral.
It appears that Downham hasn’t really been involved with running the jam for some time and that another group, The Northern Greys (which says it is moving the event as of next week) had been involved in a dispute with some regular customers about noise levels.
The club issued a statement on its Facebook page on April 28 that said:
“We would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the offensive and unprofessional remarks made from The Jam Band about the people of The Junction. We appreciate and cherish our neighbours, regular customers and friends here at Axis. Without you we would not exist. We miss a lot of those regulars that would come in every Tuesday and fill the place but don’t anymore because of the noise level. We will no longer be hosting the Tuesday night jams. We have heard your complaints and want to respect your living area. We took these complaints to heart by requesting the band on Tuesday’s to no longer use the drums after 11pm and to turn the levels down. It was pointed out to us tonight on social media that they had made some very unprofessional comments towards the neighbours of the Junction because of these complaints. We do not support this kind of behaviour and would never speak this way of our neighbours and customers. We agree the noise levels were unbearable as per the note from the city. We hope to return Tuesday’s to the way they used to be. Stay tuned for the exciting upcoming events on Tuesday’s and hope to see those wonderful faces that we have been missing. Friday’s and Saturdays remain as a full band. Any band members that do not respect Axis and the customers that support them (which includes our neighbours) should not be playing in The Junction. Thank you friends and neighbours for all of your love and support.”
Stay tuned for info about forthcoming developments.
