\ TO CENTRAL-UPTOWN \
There are festivals and special events aplenty taking place all across the city and in 905, 519 and 705 regions, as today’s listings detail.
But one lower-profile event that’s worthy of some notice is a fundraiser taking place in a unique venue that’s hosted many interesting shows in the past, some of which we’ve written about.
The Artists Garden Co-operative is a space at 345 Balliol Street just off Yonge north of Davisville that periodically hosts artists like Steve Raiken, Brian Jantzi, Harpin’ Norm Lucien and others of the Roots-songwriting ilk and today all three of them will be on hand for a two-part fundraiser show.
Starting at noon the house and its backyard garden are open for an art show by four featured artists and a bargain-hunting yard sale with all items priced from $1-25 —all proceeds go to Gilda’s Club, an organization that helps cancer victims become cancer survivors.
Musically the event is divided into two parts, with the two double-feature shows in the afternoon and evening each costing $20, again with proceeds going to Gilds’s. Intricate and soulful songwriter Raiken (whose show here a year ago we wrote about at the time) kicks off the performances with a set from 2-2:45, followed by the Doug & Suzi duo till 4.
In the evening, Harpin’ Norm (who as we told you a couple of years ago, has evolved into a suave, poised bandleader while still retaining his folksy demeanour and unassuming persona) is on at 7:15 with a combo he’s calling The Harpin’ Norm Collective that also features rollicking Jantzi on guitar and steel pan player Darlene Sacks on percussion. The final set of the day will be by the Krelner Collective from 8:15 till 9.
