She’s bright, buoyant, funny and deep and crafts songs with feel-good music but lyrics that are sometimes a bit abstruse, other times feel ironic or even pointed, but that also on occasion can be poignantly sweet or sentimental. It’s quite a range to pack into one 9-song album, but on Chances Are I Like You Mary Stewart has done just that.
Indeed, Stewart has no definitive style that you can pigeonhole her into —each tune is its own creation, making for an interesting listen. But it’ll be demanding of her 6-piece backing band tomorrow night at the 9 p.m. cd release party for the disc at The Rivoli (334 Queen St. W.). Four other acts open for her, including The Danger Bees. Cover is just $10 at the door. 17
