The way live music clubs are opening, closing and re-opening on the Toronto scene of late, it feels a bit like watching the swinging doors of a wild west saloon. And the simile is somewhat appropriate, given the chaotic regulatory and business framework within which clubs are operating these days.
Longtime venues such as Fionn MacCool’s Esplanade, The Central and The Hideout have shut (with several others apparently about to, such as Silver Dollar and Holy Oak) while several new rooms have popped up here and there (too many to list, several with a likely lifespan that could end up rivalling that of fruit flies with the haphazard approach some of them take to promotion) and yet others that had shuttered have either now reopened or are expected to soon.
In that last group are Fat City Blues —back in action since November after closing for several months previously— Harlem (in a new location) and of course Hugh’s Room, which, after abruptly closing in January, is still expecting to be back in business by late spring, with a GoFundMe.com campaign initiated by Roots songwriter and erstwhile concert organizer Howard Gladstone now up to $67,000 of its $150K goal.
The latest to join the resurrection category is uptown Irish tippler’s hangout and regular live music room Scruffy Murphy’s Irish Pub, which poured its last pint at 150 Eglinton Avenue East this past November, occasioning much angst from local players and fans. The building they were in is being redeveloped.
My most recent visit there was in July of last year for what wasn’t supposed to be a happy occasion but ended up being actually a lot of fun —the wake for longtime uptown music scene mover, shaker and pundit/wit Adrian “Tex Chainsaw” Egan, who had passed away suddenly earlier that week.
Although ostensibly we were there to mourn, Adrian’s irrepressibly cheeky spirit was very much in the room and his joke-loving buds were soon cracking one another up with stories and wisecracks, leading one former Egan band-mate to comment that “I came for a wake and ended up at Yuk Yuk’s.” There was also impromptu live music, since the room’s little stage had seen Tex and many of those in the house making music there for decades, including a moving performance by Egan’s nephew, Brady O’Sullivan, using his uncle’s prize Vantage guitar. (He seemed to be channelling Adrian that afternoon, btw, with some almost eerie echoes of his phrasing, stance and vocal tone, none of it apparently intentional but pronounced nevertheless.)
In November it seemed like just another piece of our shared history was passing into the beyond when word got out that the room had closed. So you can imagine how surprised I was this week to get a gig notice from Blues/Jazz.Pop/R&B-Soul singer (she’s very versatile) Tracey Gallant that she was performing tonight at Scuffy Murphy’s on Eglinton Avenue East. But just before typing a note on her Facebook event for the 10pm duo gig telling her I doubted she’d have much fun in an abandoned room, I decided I’d just check to make sure she wasn’t referring to another Scruffy’s (Scruffy’s Irish Pub) that’s located on Eglinton Avenue West in Mississauga. (Yes, it’s confusing, as we reported a couple of years ago —particularly because there’s also, or at least was, a pub by the same name in Etobicoke!)
No, the gig she was listing was at Scruffy Murphy’s Irish Pub in TO alright, but the address was given as 180 Eglinton Ave. E., which originally I’d assumed was either a typo or sloppiness. Google maps didn’t help much, showing the old Golden Griddle still at that location on street view, but then after I dug in and did more research, lo and behold, I found a good news story!
It turns out that the owner of Scruffy’s uptown, Tony, was able to arrange to take over the Griddle space at 180 Eglinton and the pub has now been reopened since the beginning of this month, according to a helpful staffer who answered the phone number now listed for the room a few doors east of where they had been located for close to two decades.
The new room has a Facebook page and appears to be set to have a great St. Patrick’s Day. As far as I know tonight’s show will be the first in the new locale, but apparently they’re planning on featuring live acts Saturdays (with Friday karaoke) in the space that’s smaller than their previous location but nicely located right on the corner of Redpath Ave., not far from across the street where The Unicorn, another longtime live music room in the area that closed in July of 2015, used be.
Just when you think you know what’s going on TO’s live music scene is bound to surprise you. I love it when it’s a happy one!
