\ TO EAST \
Normally this time of year on a Saturday night if I’m not snug at home —as I more often am lately, being a tad more sensible these days than I was in my recent youth— then I can be found attending music shows, being driven from place to place (it usually being a bit too chilly and slippery to comfortably ride my e-bike) by my buddy and part-time driver Darwin Bruce.
Tonight, however, although I’m definitely planning on going to a show and am unlikely to chance using the bike, I’m at a loss as to how I’ll get there —because Darwin is actually the main attraction I’m going to see. And that’s despite the fact that he plays bass —albeit uncommonly well— and that iconic six-stringer Wendell Ferguson plays guitar and “Hurricane” Mike Thompson is on pedal steel in the band he’s part of!
Already anyone savvy with the Blues or Country scenes in the GTA has guessed that this five-piece group, calling itself Ed Smith and The Even Squares, is no ordinary outfit. But it’s the occasion that makes this particular gig at Black Swan Tavern special, because it’s all about Darwin Bruce.
For tonight the venerable, versatile and seemingly unstoppable bassist, singer, acoustic guitar player and singer-songwriter (not to mention chauffeur, handyman, humourist/storyteller and all round good guy and companion on an excursion) is celebrating the start of his 73rd trip around the sun, having achieved 72 full revolutions a few days ago.
As a veteran of the TO Country scene, and lately an also familiar presence both as a Blues four-stringer with various combos and as a participant at Roots open stages, Darwin knows a lot of musicians and a lot musicians both respect and like him. Whether with various combos that he’s been part of such as tonight’s group, or with Rockabilly artist Bonnie Elvis, with Blues-Roots songwriter Pete Otis or backing Roots-Rock Pop tunesmith Michael Bär, for examples among many others, Darwin has a knack for adding exactly what’s required, no more and certainly never any less.
He’s not a fancy “power bass” thumper but does the job of providing a solid, interesting and reliable bottom end —what a bass player’s mission is supposed to be in Blues, Country and Roots-Rock.
I first met him about seven years ago when he came out to one of my open stages at the suggestion of a mutual friend and ever since I’ve always appreciated his style, his musical talents and, very occasionally, even his sense of humour —LOL! He famously impersonated himself at a series of my events a few years ago, creating quite a hoot, and sometimes also gets a laugh for the rather dry, somewhat old school story-jokes he likes to tell between tunes when he’s doing a solo songwriter set —they’re groaners, but they’re good ‘uns.
Nattily attired when we head out to check out talent and always arrayed appropriately when on stage (whether with a tie and jacket or in jeans and a workshirt, depending on the occasion) Darwin has a knack for fitting in both musically and aesthetically with whatever’s going on. Maybe that’s something he learned in the army as a young man when he lived in the wilds of Alaska, but however he acquired it, his timing and sense of place is impeccable. And he’s been in a lot of musical places here in TO.
I’m not exactly an unknown person on the music scene but often when we go somewhere where I’m less so, while I often hang back on my own, no sooner is the band on break than he’s up renewing acquaintances with this or that player and often meeting new ones.
Though Darwin normally doesn’t make a big deal about his birthday, he decided that this year, he told me a few months ago, he finally wants to have an actual party and has hired his own band for the occasion, which kicks off in the club at 154 Danforth Ave. at 10 p.m.
He hasn’t said anything about having special guests up during breaks but it wouldn’t surprise me, because the audience is bound to contain a lot of talents, since these days not everyone who deserves it has work in the biz on a Saturday night.
There’s no cover and I’m hoping to get there early in order to be able to grab a seat, because I expect it to fill up fast. Hell, if only a quarter of the people he’s played bass with since I’ve known him show up, there’ll be a lineup around the block!
Only one question remains: how the hell am I gonna get there?
