Blues series behind 8-ball with imminent closure of On Cue | TorontoMoon.ca 170517We | Shows for Wed. May 17, 2022

Jake Chisholm with Dave McManus and Cleave Anderson at previous Wed. show -FACEBOOK

\ TO WEST \

Tonight, sad to say, is the third-last installment of the popular weekly “Hump Night Blues” shows happening Wednesdays at a west TO billiard hall/music venue, as the property has been sold and the new owners want a clean slate to start their occupancy on June 1 we’re told.

It’s been a little over two years now since veteran versatile bass player Dave McManus and equally experienced and talented drummer Cleave Anderson teamed up as the Blues Krewe to initiate the series on Feb. 11 of 2015 at On Cue Billiards on Jane Street.   In the time since, some stellar talents have guested with the house rhythm section, which is usually also complemented by sax player and percussionist George Baumann along with various drop-in accompanists.

The list of featured players for the final three 8-10:30 p.m. shows (in this room —I have to believe it’s likely the event will get picked up by another venue before too long) exemplifies the high calibre of the guest roster and Dave tells me “we had some great new guests lined up into July.”  Recent visitors included Paul Storm, Ferguson Hambleton, Tom Robertson, Voodoo Walters and Roots ‘n’ Branches, to name a few.

Tonight’s attraction, for example, is now-veteran Blues/Jazz guitarist and songwriter Jake Chisholm, whom I recall first hearing when he was a promising young talent eager to break onto the scene over 20 years ago, when he fronted his Jake and the Blue Midnights band.  We once featured him on the cover of to-nite magazine  for his original tunes and he’s always also been a very much in demand session player for a who’s who of local Blues artists.

We did tell you here about Chisholm’s 2013 album Diamond In A Coalmine, about which guest writer Sarah French had some very positive things to say.  That was his third release and last year saw the latest, No More Sorrow, of which no doubt he’ll have copies in hand at tonight’s no-cover show.

After tonight there are two more installments of the series left in the room at 349 Jane St. about midway between Bloor St. West and Dundas Street.  Next week sees the return of Davi Rockit and Michael Titherington of the Full Bore Blues band.  Then the finale on the 31st —which is also the club’s last day of operation— will feature passionately rousing and awesomely talented Blues sensation Tony “Wild T” Springer for what is sure to be a total blow out of highly memorable proportions.
