The McDales (Herb Dale & Fran McCann) -Gary 17

The McDales (Herb Dale & Fran McCann) -Gary 17

\ TO WEST \

It’s a busy day and evening with some truly great musical offerings all across Toronto and the GTA and surrounding areas.  But nowhere will it be any more diverse, absorbing or gratifying than what you can find this afternoon on Roncesvalles Avenue in TO’s west end area.

The strip between Queen West and Dundas West once known as the “Little Poland” area has long since evolved into a gentrified neighbourhood with interesting shops and lots of little bars and cafés that offer live music on Saturday afternoons, as we’ve told you on a few occasions.

But today the tunes will be out on the street too as the one-day annual Roncy Rocks Festival takes place from 11 a.m. till 9 p.m. and includes three outdoor stages with a stellar list of participants like Jerome Godboo, Jessica Stuart Few and Danny Michel to name a few.

Meanwhile the usual fine selection of musical offerings will be happening indoors at places like The Local and, of course, Gate 403, which was the room that, as I related a couple of years ago, was really at the heart of the musical evolution and transformation of this area since it opened 24 years ago, in 1993.

Today is the second last installment of this season’s Saturday matinees put on there for many years now by veteran Roots-Country songwriter Bill Heffernan and in keeping with the spirit of the surrounding festival it’s going to be a dilly.  The featured performers are none other than Glen Hornblast and his Queen Street Cowboys, a Roots-Rock combo that I wrote about glowingly after a performance three years ago and that continues to live up to all the superlatives I lavished on it then.

What’s more, Glen and Bill will also have another special guest sitting in to do some tunes: Country songwriter and near-legendary open mic host Uncle” Herb Dale. That’s already heart-warming for those who know the aptly named troubadour with touchingly simple but catchy tunes and about some of the medical struggles he’s had to enduremedical struggles he’s had to endure during the past few years.

But I’d expect Herb to be in a particularly buoyant mood today especially because he’ll almost certainly be accompanied for his set by his life partner and bassist/singer duo-mate Fran McCann, with whom he forms the nucleus of The McDales.  That’s not a rarity exactly, but look for a big, permanent smile on Fran’s face throughout the gig: just a couple of days ago she retired with full honours from her rather gruelling day job and now starts a whole new exciting chapter of her life in which it seems likely we’ll all be seeing more of her and her mate on stage!
