Laura Hubert first of stellar talents for Kensington Jazz Fest weekend | TorontoMoon.ca 170915Fr | Shows for Friday, September 15, 2021

Laura Hubert & Peter Hill -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

This weekend’s Kensington Market Jazz Festival’s second annual 2017 edition involving over 250 musicians in 170 shows at 20 locations kicks off this afternoon with a 5:30 set by the Laura Hubert Band.

It’s a fitting choice, as Laura’s ties with the market and its environs go way back to her early Leslie Spit TreeO days when she was a budding busking Folk-Rock singer but part of a mileu that included a lot of talented Jazz performers,

Hubert appears 5:30-6:30 at the Poetry Jazz Café on Augusta Ave. with a combo that includes, naturally, keys wiz Peter Hill (who is also part of Alex Pangman’s Alleycats doing a 7:30 set at Trinity Common located practically next door) as well as Eric St-Laurent on guitar and Davide Direnzo on drums.

Kensington Market may be known more for Roots-Rock, Punk and dirty Blues, but it also has long had a strong contingent of “street Jazz” artists, pre-eminent among them the ageless Jim Heinemann, who has been a fixture in the area since forever and a week.

I recall, in fact, how shortly after Supermarket (which is one of the 20 rooms participating in this three-days and nights affair) opened in 2004, one June it was actually host to the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival’s late-night Jazz jams that are one of that event’s biggest draws for players and knowledgeable fans.  And it was none other than Heinemann who, along with Wayne Cass and similarly gifted players, was part of the house band for those sessions.

The Market has come a long way since those days, seeming today far less insular and xenophobic than it was fifteen years ago and this festival certainly seems to demonstrate that.

But in true nonconformist Kensingtonian fashion it also does things in its own way.  One example is that all admission charges for this festival (which ain’t cheap, ranging from $12 and up —though there are a few free and pwyc sets sprinkled in there too, such as the stellar free series at Tom’s Place) must be paid in cash only and there are no advance tickets!  Who ever heard of a festival operating like that?  Well now you have.

Lest you think that this is a less than serious endeavour a quick look at the lineup for just tonight alone will disabuse you of that notion.  You don’t get participation from artists like Colleen Allen, Jackie Richardson, Nathan Hiltz, Fred Spek, Kirk MacDonald, Margaret Stowe, Lala Biali Trio, Ori Dagan, Mark Lalama and the Heavyweights Brass Band (to name just a few who stand out this evening) without having your stuff together.

The founder of the non-profit organization that puts on the festival and other shows in the Market throughout the year is in fact one of Toronto’s most hailed Jazz singers and also a “street Jazz” veteran.  Molly Johnson explains in a press release that the idea of cash-at-the-door-only policy is so that “music lovers have to prove themselves by showing up.”

It ensures that pre-sold seats won’t sit empty and at last year’s debut festival, she says, “in fact nearly all the shows were sold out,” with artists thrilled that “houses were full and audiences were completely engaged.”

The event’s home page contains a full list of the impressive array of talents taking part this weekend.  For more specific details on the set times and cover charges for tonight’s shows and the rest of the weekend you can also visit their website’s schedule page where you’ll find each day’s shows listed alphabetically according to artist, or download a chronological list.

The listings also appear on TorontoMoon.ca’s shows calendar, naturally.
