\ TO EAST \
No matter how you say their names together (ZwolRox or RoxZwol) the pairing of Robbie Rox and Walter Zwol for a show sounds a bit like one of those miracle medications you might see advertised on tv and that also has a gazillion dutifully-listed strange potential side effects.
Which sounds about right for the teaming up of what show promoter Pete Otis is calling “The Original Bald Boys of Rock” concatenation of legendary great vocalists which will appear with Mike McKenna’s band and a slew of other guests as part of the one-year anniversary and fan appreciation edition of his SongTown “Hoser Blues Party” series today.
Both of the all-star guests are tried and true consummate performers whose pioneering spirits have led them to become nearly cult figures among fans who’ve stayed loyal for four or more decades.
In Zwol’s case, his voice has been compared favourably with Elton John’s and he’s a coveted special guest whose recordings and concert appearances always sell well.
His stellar early career as the singer for seminal ‘70s “TO Sound” Rock band Brutus, combined with a subsequent forty-year solo career that has catapulted him onto world class stages across the continent and beyond, has been boosted by a fan club that actually calls itself the National Walter Zwol Cult of America!
Rox, who has his own strong contingent of die-hard followers, has reinvented himself several times since his 1970 stage debut playing acoustic guitar while wearing pyjamas in Quebec, to the in-yer-face proto-Punk Rude Band we first wrote about in the early 90s, through various Monster Horn Band operatic R&B/art Rock combinations, and more recently with variations on stripped down power-quintets in an act that turns the idea of a lounge-lizard into a lounge-Godzilla!
Smooth instrumentals back Rox’s always outrageous, delightfully provocative lyrics and acrobatic multi-octave vocal range and character morphing in a show that is captivating and, even when you already know the tunes by heart, never gets old or stilted.
At today’s 4-8 show at Black Swan Tavern in east TO, these two vocal and performance powerhouses who will be given free reign to explore whatever musical realms they wish thanks to all-star support from the house band.
Blues slide legend McKenna’s Slidewinder band, an impressive veteran combo of guitarist Tom Robertson, drummer Rob Kirpatrick and bassist Hap Roderman, will also be joined tonight by harp ace Jay Moonah.
House band members may also sit in for sets by several other special guests, including Otis himself with the full house crew (a highlight of every one of these monthly shows); gifted and compelling songwriter Michael Bär; singer-guitarist Stephen Court of the up-and-coming Roots/Country Rock band High Court County; and Pat Little doing his smooth Rock originals.
Whatever side effects ZwolRox/RoxZwol may have, you can be sure that, when taken as directed in combination with the other great musical medicine and special acknowledgements of fans that are planned, it’s gonna make you feel cured of whatever ails you.
SongTown’s veteran door commander, James Ratch of Long & McQuade and Rock band promoting fame, will be at the entrance at 154 Danforth Ave. near Broadview and hitting you up for just $10 to get your dose.
