More than one reason to celebrate second anniversary of Rockpile jam | TorontoMoon.ca 170918Mo | Shows for Monday, September 18, 2021

Al Reilly -Gary 17

\ ETOBICOKE \

Hitting the two-year mark for a weekly jam is always something worth celebrating —hell, as we wrote last year at this time when Al Reilly’s Monday jam at The Rockpile came up to its first anniversary, even hitting one year is something work cheering about on today’s volatile live music club scene.

However, as revellers gather tonight for the celebratory show on the big pro-level stage in the room at 5555 Dundas St. West in Etobicoke there will be some notable absences among those assembled —but thankfully the main one expected to be missing will be returning soon.

Memorials for keyboardist Hervé Basset and for superfan/promoter Colin McAllister —both of whom could have been expected to be on hand if they had not passed away during the past few months— were also held on that same stage during the past two months, the most recent for McAllister last week organized by the host of this event, Al Reilly.

But Reilly will also likely not be in attendance tonight, and certainly won’t be handling emcee or duties or performing if he is able to stop in.  As most regulars and fans of his group already know, he’s been in hospital since suffering an apparent seizure following the McAllister memorial last Wednesday night.

Friends who’ve been out to visit him report he’s recovering well as he remains in care for tests, appears energetic and is cheerful except for the effects of his nicotine cravings.  That’s a good sign.

It’s not the first time this has happened —as we reported in 2013, he was hit by a similar event after a show then, but he also bounced back very quickly and was out of hospital and back on stage in just a few days.  I’d expect he’ll be a little more cautious this time around.

The regular members of his house band (Anthony Cee on guitar, Chris Hume on bass, Rick Anderson on keys and Niall Mellor on drums) will be on hand as usual along with guest host Jeff Kahl filling in for Al.

It’s expected there will be a giant get-well card that participants and audients can sign during the evening, which starts at 8 p.m. and for which there is no cover. And while Al may not be there to join in the fun tonight (he’s listed as doubtful, though it could be a game-time decision whether he’s able to at least make an appearance) it is certainly also worth celebrating to know that he will be returning.
