\ ORANGEVILLE \
With 66 shows scheduled at several local restaurants, pubs, businesses, parks and community centres —and even eight acts on the town’s main street, which, for the first time in the event’s history will be closed to vehicle traffic for the day— Orangeville turns Blue today as the 14th annual edition of the city’s Blues and Jazz Festival hits the peak of its schedule starting at noon.
The free event, as we originally told you in 2010 [subscribers can see the article in our Vault section] is traditionally the first outdoor summer season community music festival of the year in Ontario.
The weekend actually kicked off on Thursday, offered more than a score of shows last night and will also continue tomorrow afternoon.
But with a beautiful Saturday forecast by meteorologists, so many superb musical options (not all of them really Blues or Jazz —but hey, this is about celebrating talents, not satisfying purists) and Broadway Ave. filled to overflowing with pedestrians enjoying live acts on the street and at so many impromptu stages, today will certainly be the prime time to be there.
With a plethora shows in a multitude of venues, rather than list them here may I suggest that if you’re considering an outing to the area (some of the neighbouring villages and hamlets like Alton and Mono Mills also have events) that you plan your excursion by checking out the festival’s extremely well designed website, which includes a full listing of the shows plus maps and bios and more. It’s easy to use and very professionally presented —a model for any organization staging similar undertakings.
I’ve written a bit about my time in Orangeville in previous articles about the festival, but no doubt it’s changed a lot since I was a resident nearly 25 years ago now. Certainly its recognition and celebration of live musical talent has grown by leaps and bounds since then (when I used to perform in local bars as “Alton John” —yuk yuk) as this stellar annual event demonstrates.
It’s a great day for a road trip and you couldn’t really do much better than to head up Highway #10 past the big sky views over the rolling hills of Caledon until you hit #9 then take a left. You’ll find yourself in a little piece of paradise with nearly as much musical talent in one place as you’d encounter on a day trip to Heaven.
