\ TO EAST \
Although he’s a Juno-winning Blues songwriter who performs all over the city both doing headline shows and as a much sought-after accompanist to many other highly regarded Blues and Jazz acts, piano player and guitarist Julian Fauth still finds time every Tuesday evening —except of course when he’s on tour— to do a solo show at Sauce in TO East
Tucked away in the corner of the room at 1376 Danforth Ave., bent over the house piano Schroeder-style, he doesn’t bother with a vocal or instrumental mic and seems happily self-absorbed in doing his own thing, heedless of whether anyone is really listening or not.
They certainly should be paying close attention because what he’s sharing is brilliantly original Blues songs that sound like they were written in the 1930s. With the state of the world the way it is now, their musical stylings and often very poignant, pointed lyrics seem more resonant and relevant than ever, reflecting the angst, anger and alienation of those on the margins of society.
However closely they are or aren’t listening, Fauth’s performances appear to delight regular patrons in the small, funky, bordello-style room with an interesting selection of craft beers and tasty house menu, since it’s pretty hard to find a seat during the 6-9 p.m. sets, for which there’s no cover but a tip jar.
