Move over “Phantom of The Paradise”!

Iliya Vee and the two other members of The Roncy Boys (Christian Aldo and Colin Edgely) are back tonight with a one-night live performance of their take on the Faustian parable of the consequences of doing a deal with the devil in order to achieve Rock ‘n’ Roll fame.

Originally presented at The Super Wonder Gallery (876 Bloor St. W. a little east of Ossington) over two nights in June, the Rock opera features Todd Preston starring as the Devil with the group’s singer, Aldo, and Cat Solomon also in the acting/singing cast as Vee (on bass and backing vocals), Edgely (on piano and backing vox) and drummers/singers Shane Miersch and David Sufrin perform the accompanying original musical score.

The story is as simple as it is timeless: Ricky Dicky must decide whether to do a deal with “Mr. D” to become his “swan” in order to achieve fame, riches and all the other perks of making it big in the music biz.

For Vee (aka Iliya Vukadinovic), The Roncy Boys trio that created the opera seems to be an occasional side project, among many in addition to his own Dreadful Starlings band (which released a new record in February) and role as regular a sideman with up-and-coming young Pop songwriter Jessica Speziale.

The Roncy combo describes itself as the “Bad Boy Dandies of Piano Glam Rock,” aiming for a sound that fuses Glam, Rock opera, Pop and Soul.  In addition to composing the musical they have two ep releases of original material, some of which you can hear on their website —so you can judge for yourself if they achieve their goal.

While I didn’t see the original version of tonight’s performance, back in the venue where it premiered, I have checked out the trailer on YouTube and this looks like a fun night indeed!  Tickets are only $10 and the show runs from the 10 p.m. curtain rise till 11:55, with doors opening at 9.
