Howard Gladstone Trio -SUPPLIED

\ TO CENTRAL \

Roots songwriter Howard Gladstone has played in a lot of different venues since I first started writing about him nearly 20 years ago but, from what I’ve seen, has been somewhat picky about them —understandably given the nature of his songs.

As we told you just over a year ago, on the occasion of the first release of his latest album, Hourglass, his songs tend to have an intellectual bent lyrically, often dealing with social justice issues.  And even when delving into more personal topics, this thoughtful, reflective composer needs listeners to actually hear his voice —wallpaper Roots-Pop his tunes ain’t.

Gladstone is also a bit of a sonic connoisseur —that’s reflected, in fact, in his recent co-founding of a new record label, Sonic Peach Music.

Most of his performances take place at relaxed, performance-oriented venues such as Hugh’s Room, where he launched his album, Fat Albert’s coffeehouse, where he did a feature in June, or for the Artists Garden Co-operative series where he appeared in August.

Occasionally you will find him in a bar setting, but even then, such as when he does annual sets for the Winterfolk Festival, it tends to be in the most sedate, lounge-style room available such as Dora Keogh —where happily there is not even one television set in the room.

This afternoon’s edition of a new monthly series he’s staging with his trio —which also includes songwriters Laura Fernandez and multi-talented composer/arranger and instrumentalist Tony Quarrington, is thus suitably set in the very music-friendly Southern Comfort Lounge of the Tranzac Lounge in TO’s Annex area.

The 5-7 affair will also, Howard tells us, feature the trio doing songs written by the other two members of the group, both of whom are acclaimed songwriters in their own right.

(I wonder if they’ll tackle any of the numbers from Quarrington’s latest For King and Country album of WWI-themed songs that we told you about earlier this year, and for which he’s planning a special Remembrance Day event in honour of the end of ‘The War To End All Wars’.)

There’s no cover for the show in the casual but sonically nicely designed room in the complex at 292 Brunswick Ave. and if you go earlier to make sure you have a seat you can also take in some of the 3-5 show by award-winning Roots songwriter Michael Laderoute, who as always will be accompanied by very talented Rob Fenton on dobro or guitar.
