\ OSHAWA / TORONTO \
We’ve told you a few times now about how popular the weekly Wednesday Blues jam hosted by Howard Ross & Full Count Blues Band has become and how impressive the talent roster is both for special guests and regular participants.
Tonight’s edition will demonstrate both of those qualities to the max. It’s the two-year anniversary of the event held at The Hub, 15 Simcoe St. North in Oshawa, and you can expect the room to be jammed with all-star players.
That will include the members of the house band –Ross on multiple instruments and vocals, Al Mathews also showing his versatility on guitar, keys and vocals; Joe Lambert on sax; Nick Succi handling bass and Rich Greenspoon anchoring things on the kit.
Utilizing the skills of this troupe will be, in addition to whichever jammers participate, special guest and Durham Region resident Jack de Keyzer, who has won two Junos for Blues Album of The Year in the last decade.
It all starts at 8 p.m. and there’s no cover.
In Toronto, meanwhile, Ken Whiteley and The Beulah Band releases a new self-titled album of innovative and masterful Folk tunes at Tranzac Club.
In the Beulah configuration the indefatigable and acclaimed Genie and multiple Folk awards winner Whiteley teams up with veteran players Frank Evans on banjo, Rosalyn Dennett on fiddle and son Ben Whiteley on bass, who also co-produced the album with his dad.
You can be sure the place at 292 Brunswick Ave. will be jumpin’, since Whiteley also celebrates his birthday and will have performing special guests Mose Scarlett and two-time Roots & Traditional Album Of The Year Juno-winner and niece Jenny Whiteley also doing sets.
I assume the show takes place in the Main Hall in the multi-room venue but can’t check that with the club’s website because after a week of going through the ringer and having the site “suspended” at one point, it now has no working url at all. I can tell you it’ll start at 7 p.m. and that advance tickets were $20 or $10 for “student/under-employed” patrons.
