Despite being very gifted, there are some performers who only very occasionally share their talent by doing club gigs.
Perhaps that’s because, like quirky iconic Folk songwriter Mose Scarlett (who, in addition to some festival appearances, normally does only one show a year for a big ticket price —and sells out venues like Hugh’s Room) they figure performing less frequently guarantees a better turnout. Or maybe there are other reasons.
Regardless of the rationale, it’s always worth taking note when artists like Jazz singer Lynda Covello and art-Rock songwriter Robbie Rox take to the stage. And as happenstance should have it, both are doing shows tonight and luckily the timing is such that if, like me, you have eclectic tastes, you can easily catch both.
Covello, who’s a bit of a “mystery woman” (lol) is sharing a gig with fellow chanteuse Ros Kindler tonight at 120 Diner (120 Church St.) backed by her Deep Dark Secrets Jazz ‘n’ Blues Band that for this show will include Alison Young on sax, Amanda Tosoff on keys and Carlie Howell on bass. Perhaps it’s the desire or need to recruit such in-demand A-level players that explains why she only gigs infrequently?
Lynda has an album of classic Jazz/Blues covers, Forever Torch, that’s all about misbegotten love; and given that the theme of the 6-8 p.m. show is “Singing Songs They Love” no doubt that will include at least a couple that also appear the disc. Cover is a suggested $10-20 pwyc donation, which I believe all goes to the performers.
Following that event you’ll have a full hour to make your way east out to the corner of Danforth Ave. and Linnsmore Crescent (steps from where the Greenwood subway lets out) to catch Robbie Rox and The Power Quintet at Linsmore Tavern for just $10 at the door starting at 9.
I’ve written many times about this enigmatic multi-dimensional iconoclastic performer who’s been a cult favourite for many decades now since first coming to notice as “Canada’s Frank Zappa”. And these days he’s particularly engaging at Linsmore Tavern in his East York home neighbourhood.
Robbi’s Power Quintet is aptly named, as all of the members have all-star musical pedigrees. Bass virtuoso Russ Boswell has played with Corey Hart, sax maestro Simon Wallis with Lighthouse, uber-versatile guitarist Sil Simone with Tom Cochrane, inventive keyboardist Rob Gusevs with Domenic Troiano, and veteran drummer Vito Rezza with Gino Vanelli —just to mention a few of the household names with which this stellar support group has appeared over long and illustrious careers.
Whether you catch either or both of these shows, I guarantee you’re in for a treat.
