\ TO WEST \
He’s wearing a nice suit jacket in the photos I’m looking at and the gentleman’s glasses he sports give him a mellowed, almost studious air. But the unbuttoned denim shirts —and in one pic the centre-parted hair spilling over both sides of his head like grey remnants of a lava flow to meet facial hair that seems to have a mind of its own— speak to me of the Paul Langille I knew forty years ago in London Ontario and Hamilton.
The hard-Roots/Blues songwriter from The Steel City may no longer wear buckskin, canvas and tattered, dirty jeans on stage, but I’ll be he still does when he’s hanging out at home.
Back when I knew Paul he was, as you might guess, what is politely termed “rough around the edges” and his sometimes volatile nature was always something you hoped to avoid in favour of that other Paul: the young man with an adroit command of guitar and a voice that hearkened to the very soul of Country, Blues and Roots, seeming to rise up through him more than emanating from him.
The sheer force of his presence made him kind of scary at times, like a superhero who hasn’t yet gained full control of his powers and doesn’t always know how to contain them. As I once observed about him, “we always seem to be knocking elbows,” as his burly being and somewhat intimidating flow of restless energy seemed constantly in need of expression. But despite the occasional rawness in his demeanour, Langille’s transformation when he picked up a guitar and began to sing was a palpable delight.
His earnest, take-no-prisoners/bide-no-bullshit personal and musical styles coalesced then —and from what I saw on a promotional video on his website still do— to create a uniquely authentic and powerful artist who commands your attention and totally merits it. Paul Langille sings from the heart, from the streets and from the gut.
It’s perhaps fitting that the songs most recommended from his most recent album Pine and Locke (a somewhat down-at-the-heels corner in what we might call a totally unpretentious part of Hamilton) are “Broken” and “Just A Broken Soul”, while the gritty rockin’ Blues elements of his style come through on “Kind of Girl,” about a woman who knows how to get what she wants from a man.
Though perhaps not a household name, Langille is highly respected by artists in both the Roots and Blues genres and has won a couple of awards over the years, though I highly doubt that sort of acclaim is what motivates him to do what he does —he probably has no real choice in the matter but has to keep playing in order not to explode.
Tonight when he visits The Cat at 3163 Dundas St. West a block east of Jane St. for a 9:30 no-cover show, Paul will have an appropriately stalwart and experienced crew of musicians helping him make the most of his strengths. He’s the special guest for a Mardi Gras “Pardi Gras” extravaganza being anchored by genre-hopping bass player Dave McManus, who’s bringing in his Junction City All-Stars group that includes Jon McCann on the kit, George Baumann on sax and bolstered by second guitarist Mike Sedgewick.
The club is a lively and friendly spot with free parking out back, quite edible and affordable food and a very well-stocked bar handled by experienced staff.
