\ TO WEST \
Don’t tell Drake about this (for sure he’d be up on stage hogging the limelight if his behaviour at Raptors games is any indication) but if you’ve ever thought about shining on a pro stage with a big band featuring three saxes backing you, you now have a chance to do that once a week.
The BackTrack Band, which includes an all-female three member sax section (Carrie Chesnutt, Sophia Smith and Abigail Neale) is inviting singers and players to get “Backstage with BackTrack” most Mondays starting tonight through mid-August on the impressive main stage at Cadillac Lounge.
The group, which also includes veteran guitarist Marty Zatzman and up to six other musicians in addition to the saxes, is no stranger to accommodating guest singers, as we’ve told you previously. They were a key factor in helping young Belle Matthews take her career to the next level when she was just 16 three years ago, as we told you at the time.
BackTrack is also a summer mainstay of the music-oriented multi-stage venue at 1296 Queen Street West and for three previous years now have had successful runs there, as we told you in 2017 for that year’s series.
The group specializes in a repertoire that, as I detailed previously, includes authentic versions of Motown, Soul and R&B standards like “Chain of Fools”, “I Got The Music In Me” and “Respect”. But it and also adds variety, with takes on modern Pop numbers by artists like Amy Winehouse, soulful versions of Jazz classics like “Crazy” and “At Last” and then varies up the mix with a few perennial dance faves like “Proud Mary”.
The band has always incorporated special guest singers as part of their Cadillac showcases, including divas like Liberty Silver, and also has often featured opening bands. But the 2019 summer series is, to my knowledge, the first time they’ve opened up the stage to anyone who comes by.
The BackStage series will be running every Monday except June 24, July1 and August 5 from tonight till August 19.
It’s a short show, running 7:30-9:30 but there’s no cover and probably no breaks. And if my experience hearing this group a couple of years ago is any indication, the time will fly by but listeners will feel like they’ve had a full dose of great music by the time it’s done.
