\ TO CENTRAL \
With Country/Roots duo Sandi Marie and Guy Breau making a visit to TO this weekend and the regular monthly 4th Thursday open mic night put on by members of their former Under The Bus band going on at Grossman’s tonight, the couple have also arranged to also do a reunion show for their UTB “First Fridays” gang early tomorrow evening at the club.
It’s a rather sad occasion that brings the pair back to the city from their new home in Nova Scotia, whereto they moved 16 months ago —they’re in town to attend a memorial show for recently deceased Christine Gaidies taking place on Sunday at 120 Diner. (I can’t give you any more details about that show at the moment since no one has invited me and there’s no Facebook event for it that I’ve been able to find.)
But while the motivation for their journey may be sombre, Sandi and Guy’s time here will be anything but, as the Sunday show is bound to be mostly a celebratory affair and the chance to reunite there and at the shows tonight and tomorrow with former UTB band mates and other musical friends who attended their many sessions over the past few years is bound to make for a whole heap of hootenanny fun.
Many of the folks who attended the original Under The Bus events are still coming out regularly for the monthly Thursday shows originally initiated by that group as well as for the First Friday 6-9 pm shows that have also continued with the successor Hold The Bus band.
With the double-gig set-up this weekend some original UTB members and of the HTB and 4th Thursdays crew won’t be on hand for both nights. Drummer Malcolm Gould appears to be otherwise engaged and will be replaced at tonight’s 8-1 event by Tim Langton and tomorrow by Greg Lapointe, while regular bassist Kevin Jeffrey won’t be on hand tonight (Ian Nathanson fills in) but is expected to be on the Bus for Friday’s early show.
Tonight’s show does, however, feature regular guitarist Phil Ciglen and singer-guitarist Nicola Vaughan as well as mainstay hostess/emcee Diane Baker Mason, who is also flying in from Nova Scotia after a visit out east.
There’s no cover for either of the two shows in the down-to-earth room at 379 Spadina Ave. and you can expect a slew of musical guests to be taking part both nights. Wear comfortable shoes —you may well end up dancing.
