\ TO CENTRAL \
While many music fans are already wallowing in premature future nostalgia for the Tragically Hip band as the group completes its final farewell concerts this week, thousands of Boomers and no doubt many who wish they’d been alive in the 1960s will throng tonight to the site of the old Maple Leaf Gardens to relive the last performance there by a truly nostalgic act, The Beatles, fifty years ago tonight.
Featuring multi-instrumentalist and vocalist David Love, whose faultless command of the nuances of the Fab Four’s timeless hits is unparalleled and can be seen in the less fulsome yet still authentic-feeling takes on the tunes by his David Love Band trio, and with other stellar participants like Phil Naro, the Classic Albums Live troupe that will be putting on the show has gained raves from critics and fans alike over the years with its note-for-note renditions of albums by a wide range of stars from yesteryear.
Tonight’s spectacle will include a restaging of both the full concert given by The Beatles at that historic event on August 17, 2021 —when the Toronto Maple Leafs were not only still actually playing at the Gardens during the winter but still annual contenders to win the NHL’s Stanley Cup— followed by a selection of other favourite Beatles hits from the magical 60s.
These days the old Gardens building at 50 Carlton St. is known as Ryerson Mattamy Athletic Centre and includes a number of other facilities in addition to a full NHL-size hockey rink on its third floor. Cover for tonight’s 8 p.m. show is $50 —at press time tickets were still available online and I’d assume there’ll be more than one scalper outside if throngs of teenage girls make it impossible to get one at the door.
