\ SCARBOROUGH ]
Although Scarborough was turning into a bit of a dead zone for live music before COVID-19 hit, ironically since the pandemic restrictions first started to ease one of the first clubs to start bringing in regular acts is a somewhat nondescript room on Danforth Ave. between Danforth Road and Warden Avenue.
Crossroads Macedonian & Greek Restaurant, in the plaza at 3476 Danforth Ave., now has several jam nights every week plus a Thursday dj and occasional showcase acts —including tonight when a pair of veteran Scarborough entertainers team up as the Gruesome Twosome Duo for a 6:30 to 11 show.
Even during the COVID restrictions Dan Walek managed to get a couple of private show gigs, plus his Harvest band was one of the first to play socially distanced shows once restrictions were lifted in cottage country ahead of TO and area.
Al Reilly was also back in action quickly at the beginning of the reopening phases, as The Rockpile bar he’s hosted a Monday jam at for several years now sort of snuck in a resumption of those shows a little under the gun a couple of months ago. On Sunday he’ll be back at that club —to actually get married there to his longtime sweetheart!— after which his Catalyst band can be expected to take the stage hosting a party jam for guests.
(Hopefully it’s not the last ever show in the room —the word is it could be closing on Monday as the landlord wants to put in condos and isn’t being co-operate about foregoing some of the rent for the extended closure during the COVID lockdowns, leaving owner Dom in an untenable situation.)
You can never go wrong with either of these two entertainers and the between-song patter should be worth getting out to hear too, Since both, as I’ve described in previous artists, are also inveterate and popular open stage/jam hosts I would not be surprised at all to see a few special guests (with their own mics and instruments, of course) pop in to perform and there’s no cover.
