\ TO CENTRAL \
It’s set to be a scorcher today, with a “real feel” of 36 or 37 degrees Celsius, so a lot of people will be looking for air conditioned lounges, bars and restaurants for some relief. But while to my knowledge the air conditioning at Grossman’s Tavern is certainly working, it may not be enough to beat the musical heat that gets generated in the room at the Fourth Thursdays Open Mic & Jam held there monthly.
The 8 till late event, anchored by singer Diane Baker Mason and bassist Kevin Jeffrey along with a band including guitarist Phil Ciglen, singer-guitarist Nicola Vaughan and, filling in tonight, drummer Greg Lapointe, has seen a panoply of local Roots, Blues, Country, Rockabilly and indie talents come out to show their stuff either on their own or with the backing of the house group.
(On the Facebook event page for tonight’s hootenanny there’s a list of over 30 acts who’ve appeared at the monthly shindig in the tavern at 379 Spadina Ave. held, as its name would indicate, on the fourth Thursday of every month.)
There’s no cover and the room remains casual and unhip, just the way it’s always been —and just the way so many real musicians like it.
