“May 2-4” long weekends ain’t what they used to be, and for live music fans that’s a good thing. Time was, even ten years ago, that almost every club that normally booked live music would shut down their stages for the duration. But with the rise of the “staycation” (thanks to insane price rises, zealous road trip enforcement and other factors) in recent years there are not only a lot of regular shows still happening but also several special events and festivals.
If you want to pretend you’re “getting away” but stay within the orbit of urbanization, you might check out the Waterdown Arts & Music Streetfest in the scenic little burg nestled in Halton Hills. David Love’s stellar trio also featuring Darrell McNeill kicks off the main stage in Memorial Park at 2:30 with its roaring 60s Pop-Hop covers after an indie songwriter at 1 and they’ll be followed by some R&B and Hip Hop before tributes to Queen and Elton John take over at night. Admission to the Memorial Park where it’s being held is just $10 and there’s lots of stuff for kids and families plus various artsy vendors and food and beer stalls. It also continues tomorrow.
Among some intriguing events happening in TO itself, the celebration of World Fiddle Day (apparently it’s actually a thing) taking place at the Aga Khan Museum and nearby Ismaili Centre (at 77 and 49 Wynford Drive in North York/TO East) from late morning through the evening, looks to be pretty spectacular and perhaps enlightening.
While many of us may think of fiddle as a Country instrument and violin as primarily belonging to Classical suites (along with, of course, some electro-violin in Rock), this day featuring workshops, a massive all-star jam and finale concert, will open your mind to how the instrument and its variations are being used by composers from various cultures around the world.
It includes Jazz/Rock catgut writer and accompanist Anne Lindsay; Country fiddle/step-dance artists Diana and Andrew Dawydchak; Chinese er hu player Amely Zhou; Persian fiddle performer Kousha Nakhaei, and Quebec fiddle-guitar duo Pascal Gemme & Yann Falquet among others.
They’ll all be appearing backed by an all-star house band comprised of Emilyn Stam, David Woodhead, Naghmeh Farahmand, Martin Van de Ven, Tom Leighton and Anne Lederman, all accomplished, versatile performers able to improvise and enhance accompaniments for anyone they perform with in any genre.
There’s also, btw, an interesting looking lineup for an all-day Roots/Folk festival that’s taking over the various rooms of Tranzac Club from 2 p.m. through the evening. The “Little York Folk Festival” features workshops from 2-6, a live band hosting “Bluegrass Karaoke” (!) from 5-7, then a gala concert afterwards with various artists.
Even if you’re not traveling far, you can still do plenty of exploring today!
