As we told you about this time a year ago, Tuesdays tend to be a quiet night for bands doing live music shows in Scarborough —in fact there are exactly none that we know of.
But that doesn’t mean there’s no live musical entertainment at all, because for several years now dynamic karaoke hosting duo Carol MacDonald and partner Rob (aka The English Rose & The Mad Scotsman) have been hosting a very happening weekly show at a well established and relaxed room, The Fossil and Haggis at 790 Military Trail.
Located in a little plaza at the corner of Military Trail and Morningside Ave. (so it’s very accessible off the 401 a few hundred metres north if you’re travelling by car) the F&H is a fairly typical British pub style room but because it’s independently owned rather than part of one of the big chains it also has its own identity and a strong contingent of both neighbourhood regulars and folks who come out for the Tuesday k-shows and when the room offers live music Fridays.
(Unfortunately there’s no way to find out who’s performing any given Friday, since the club’s website is mostly all about food and has no show listings, while their Facebook presence is pretty much non-existent, with a page that hasn’t been updated in almost two years.)
Tuesdays, however, this place has it all together, thanks largely to Carol and Rob, who put on a professional, welcoming show wherever they appear. (They also do a weekly Saturday night show at tiny but dynamic Winners on Lawrence Ave. and Sunday evenings at Pearson Pub on Mary St. in downtown Whitby.)
In addition to making a point of approaching newcomers to invite them up the couple loves to get “group sing” things going, often doing a rousing song that lends itself to singalongs whenever things start to lag.
They also have a pro-calibre sound system with great mics and know how to make any singer sound good. That makes it an ideal event both for amateurs just out to have fun and for professional singers to try out a song you’ve been thinking you might want to do but may need some practice to perfect.
The show starts at 9:30, goes late and is one heck of a lot of fun!
