Katey Morley 2014 -GARY 17

Katey Morley 2014 -GARY 17

\ TO WEST \

When is a music album not an album?  Well, maybe when it’s actually two eps?

For that is how autoharp/piano player, singer and songwriter Katey Morley is describing the release tonight of her Now/Then at The Piston, perhaps explaining the double-barreled nature of the title for the 11-song collection being launched.

Whatever the presentation format, if the tunes on the records (and they are being released as two vinyl records as well as on compact disc and, covering the third base, download drop cards) are as elegantly recorded and contain the same level of substance, passion and resonance as versions on her YouTube channel, attendees and purchasers are in for a treat.

I’ve only heard Morley perform live once, a couple of years ago at Julian Taylor’s Monday open stage at Dora Keogh, but I was impressed with what I heard then, noting at the time that on her tunes “All Things Go”, “White Star” and “Fire Light” her autoharp sounded like a Rock guitar in places but was also, when called upon for more intimate moments, sweet and tender.  Her voice (she’s a very strong singer —listen to her take on Chris Isaac’s “Wicked Game” at the Supermarket jam!) is likewise versatile and accomplished.

The autoharp lends itself to creating an ethereal feel which can also be poignantly wistful, which works splendidly on songs like “Didn’t You” or “Big Smoke” on her YouTube channel.  Her performance on piano is also engaging and at time insistent, especially on a tune like “Lady Cop Seeks Revenge For A Family Done Wrong,” an energetically driving number with punch.

On her Facebook event page Katey says the release is the culmination of 14 years of work and from what I’ve seen online that time and effort has been well spent.  The recent video tracks show a talent that has been honed and polished to a fine degree over the two-and-a-half years since I heard her.

Tonight’s event is organized into two sets, one at 9 and a repeat (presumably) at 10, with both featuring Morley backed by a full band (which I assume will include Steve York on guitar, as featured on one of the videos and often with her live, and likely other stringed accompaniments) and also “special guests.”  Doors to the room at 937 Bloor St. W., near Ossington, open at 8:30 and admission is $15, which also includes a free dropcard.
