\ TO EAST \
A group that just sort of appeared out of nowhere (as far as I was aware) six months ago, High Court County seems on a fast track to prominence on the TO bar scene these days, having played several disparate venues across the GTA in that time with their Country-Blues and Rock/Soul covers and now recording an ep of originals.
Sparked by the high-energy electric guitar of Arie Papernick and smooth but by turns twangy, soulful or passionately urgent vocals of young acoustic guitar frontman Stephen Court, the band delivers convincing and entertaining versions of songs ranging from Patsy Cline’s “I Fall To Pieces” through Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Games” and a wide range of appealing Rockabilly type material from the realm of Rootsy-Rock and Soul in between.
Guitarist Papernick tells me that the group has been recording original songs for an ep at Escarpment Sound in Halton Hills, “trying to do what Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton are doing —new songs with the old sound.” You can actually see a tantalizing teaser vid of them working on a very catchy origional in the studio, as well as some live vids of them in action at various bars, on their Facebook page.
Frontman Court first came to my attention this winter when I saw him perform solo at Seb Agnello’s Monday night open stage at Black Swan Tavern. He was highly capitvating and another who took note was Pete Otis of SongTown, who has started featuring him along with the likes of Mike McKenna and George Olliver on a couple of his multi-act bills, including an upcoming show with McKenna and Cathy Young as part of the Hoser Blues Nights series on Sun. May 21.
This year alone the band, which also includes Andrew Bennett on bass and Brian Cruickshank on drums, has already appeared at venues as divergent as the Swan, Relish, The Peppery Cat and The Duke Live in east TO, done a pair of shows at Blue Goose Tavern in Etobicoke, gigged twice each at Big Daddy’s and Good Times Café in Newmarket as well as at Karla’s Roadhouse in Scarborough, and done shows at Father’s Moustache Grill in Aurora and Oscar’s in Brampton.
They have another first-time gig coming up this Saturday night at a bar that loves Country Rock, The Newoundlander on Danforth Road in Scarborough. Tonight, however, they debut at yet another new room, a venue that’s also well suited to their brand of “outlaw Country” (as the group describes itself) and Roots-Rock/Soul, as they appear at Linsmore Tavern starting at 8:30.
There’s no cover for what you can expect to be a rip-roaring show on the nicely appointed, lit-up performance area of the room at 1298 Danforth Ave. a few dozen steps from the entrance to the Greenwood subway station.
