\ STOUFFVILLE \

As a co-holder of the original Guinness World Record for “longest live event streamed over the internet” back when the web was still a waif in 2001, you can bet my interest was aroused when I heard that enterprising Kevin Ker and his Epidemic Music Group was apparently attempting to set a new record for the category of longest concert by multiple artists!

If successful, Kevin’s 16 24-hour-days-and-nights undertaking at Earl of Whitchurch bar in Stouffville will more than double and totally obliterate the mark of 181 hours that a large gang of us achieved in October of ’01 at a bar in Mississauga known as Touchdowns.  (Apparently since then a Las Vegas promoter casino hit the 372+ hours mark, now the official record.)

Our show, which included luminaries like Ronnie Hawkins, Downchild Blues Band, Paul James, Goddo, Alan Frew, Jeff Healey, The 5-Man Electrical Band and of course a passle of us ordinary artists, was arranged as a stunt to raise funds for first responders and victims of that year’s 9/11 attacks in the United States.  A delegation subsequently travelled to NYC afterwards to present the dough as part of various ceremonies and in the end we were also were awarded certificates for longest live music concert and longest charity concert broadcast.  [Subscribers can read all about it in the jpg post of the pages from the to-nite #229 cover story in our Vault section.]

It appears that Ker and the hundreds of artists who will participate in this new endeavour are basically focused on one record —that of longest live concert by multiple artists.  But because it is also being streamed (you can tune in at any time over the next 15 days on the Epidemic website or on YouTube) and is benefitting not one but 16 separate worthwhile charities, there’s no reason it shouldn’t be awarded those distinctions as well when it wraps up at 7 p.m. on Sunday April 2.

Things got underway at 7 p.m. St. Patrick’s Day with a packed house and included sets by TREO, JUSTIN KERSWILL & JENNA GALLAGHER and the OPP CHORUS up till midnight last evening.  Then Stephanie Braganza, HOTCHA!, DREW LEITH, JESSE DYNES, Four One Six, Tim Cox Knuckleheads, KEN LAYTON, and another unnamed special guest artist before 8 a.m., with THE GUILD, JOEL SAUNDERS, PROJECT CLASSIFIED and HAPPY JACK & THE RAINMAKERS scheduled to go from 8 till noon.  (For the schedule from noon on up till tomorrow at noon see today’s show listings in 905 North; the schedule will appear in that format for the balance of the marathon.)

A little after midnight I tuned in to the online stream and caught the tail end of a set by sultry and sizzling R&B/Soul-Rock singer Stephanie Braganza, then, when I came back a little later, uber promoter and Roots songwriter/singer-percussionist Beverley Kreller was on stage in her delightful HOTCHA! duo.

It’s available in High-Def quality and the sound is impressive too —quite a different experience than trying to watch the herky-jerky low res stream on dial-up from our event 16 years ago!  I haven’t been able to turn it off since.

Having “been there and done that” of course I’m looking not only at the performers but also trying to grok on all the behind-the-scenes stuff going on and I’ve been impressed with both.

It’s the wee hours that are hardest, as Kevin acknowledged when he briefly took the mic between sets (he had to be brief —Guinness rules state no more than 5 minutes can be allotted to act changeover) at 7 a.m. this morning.  “it was a scary night at one point” earlier when staffing and audience ran somewhat thin.  For to qualify for a Guinness record, the rules also state that you have to have at least “ten awake people” in the room listening to the performer and since artists can only take 30 seconds between a song and no tune can be repeated within any four-hour period, not having people dedicated to monitoring as well as others enjoying could be fatal to the ultimate goal.

But as a host of three current open mics and several years worth of past ones in the 905 North area and beyond, Ker has a vast community of followers among musicians and bar patrons in that sprawling, reasonably well heeled vicinity, many of whom can be expected to flock to the proceedings over the course of the week both as performers and helpers.

A bit of flash mob surge has already happened in fact.  Ker mentioned in his brief comments that a number of the “bands that are coming out to play are offering to come volunteer and be a part of this beyond just playing so that’s huge.”  Also, of course folks involved with any of the very worthy charities who are being benefitted by all this manic musicality can also be expected to throng there during the days and early evenings, when music bars are usually a little slower.

The beneficiaries of the $5 donation that visitors are asked for comprise an impressive list of do-good organizations, from the Markham Stouffville Hospital that kicked off last evening and continues as benefactor today, through groups like Arts Canada (today’s recipient), Evergreen Hospice, Habitat for Humanity, Anti-Violence Youth, United, Way, Gord Downie Fund, Sick Kids Hospital and others focused on cat rescue and brain health —the full list is on the event’s main Facebook page.

Although, as Ker also noted at the 12-hour mark (which, btw, works out to 3.1% of the 384 total hours for which they’ll be performing) “everything we’re doing for this first 24 hours is the very first time we’ve ever done it,” things appear to be running with astonishing smoothness.  That’s actually the norm for this two-storey bar at 6403 Main St. (quite near the GO Station) in which the event is being held.  I haven’t been there for about a dozen years now, but everything I’ve seen and heard about it since suggests it’s still a very happening little pub that takes seriously the business of ensuring patrons have fun and has pretty good grub to boot.

Although of course the Earl won’t be able to serve alcohol beyond usual hours (is there really any good reason we shouldn’t allow a 24-hour service exemption for something like this?) they brought in free pizza after the kitchen was closed overnight.  And no doubt the room is well supplied with an interesting selection of coffees, soft drinks, teas, juices, desserts and so on in order to keep both patrons’ interest awake and their cash register still working in the wee hours —of if they’re not, they should be.  For sure they won’t run out of coffee. Red Bull Coffee is among the sponsor who’ve donated items to help make this happen, in their case unlimited free coffee with wings for all 16 days!

Organizers also have made a deal with a local hotel for discount room prices and did a good job of getting both local media to promote the event —CITY-TV even sent a reporter up to play the drums with Ker and co-organizer Dave Mills for a spot that was aired in the middle of all the St. Patrick’s Day hype just prior to the kickoff.  Impressive.

What’s also impressive is some of the talent.  I’ve already taken note of two artists I’d never heard of before but who caught my ears and brain with energetic, memorable original material.  No doubt there will be a ton more such discoveries to be made during the approximately 370 hours still to go for this show of shows by the time I’m able to send this to you.

I’m hoping to get there in person at some point and maybe finagle my way on stage, even if just for a couple of songs.  The chance to help better my own shared record and be probably the only person to have two such certificates is a pretty powerful draw!

You should at least check it out online (I believe you can also donate that way) and/or, if you’ve got wheels or don’t mind the GO, get to Stouffville yourself and be part of something that has all the earmarks of being a once-in-a-generation historic event.  Hopefully someone’s also recording some of the behind-the-scenes action for what surely should be a forthcoming “Making Of” documentary about how it all happened —and taking pics for the book!
