Kayt Lucas & Michael Menegon at Legends in March 2018 -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

Playing a distinctive octave mandolin instrument that uses six twinned strings to deliver a more versatile and energetic sound than a traditional acoustic guitar, songwriter Kayt Lucas describes her passionate, soulful Roots-Rock music as “Hard Folk,” but it’s pretty easy listening live.

I had a chance to catch her for a set last month when, accompanied by guitarist Michael Menegon from her Kayt and the Hard Folks band, she did the feature at the Thursday open mic at Legends in east TO.  Even as a duo, she more than lived up to expectations roused by watching and listening to her band online, as I had described in an article just over a year ago.

Tonight, however, she’ll be on her own as part of the weekly songwriters-in-the-round session at Amsterdam Bicycle Club at 54 The Esplanade downtown.  But she won’t be lonesome, as she’ll be sharing the stage with veteran Rock-Blues songwriter Karen Lee Wilde, singer-songwriter Frank Patrick and host Robert Pelletier of the Felix & The Cats original Roots-Rock band.

The ABC Songwriters Circle 9-12 Tuesday shows, as we’re shared with you previously, are not only rife with talent and songs but also, as I also described earlier this year, offer an engaging dialogue between the artists and host Robert Pelletier —as well as the audience, which is encouraged to ask questions during the between-songs patter.

170515 Moon spreads word WLucas, who’s getting ready to release her third album next month, will no doubt have a lot to contribute to the chats as well as musically.

In addition to being a thought-provoking composer and able lyricist, the former aerialist/dancer is a thoughtful observer of the local scene who recently shared some pithy observations about the “Music City” concept and the need for more grassroots-driven  connectedness and co-ordinated promotions on a lengthy social media post.

With nice weather, no shortage of interesting conversation and captivating musicality on offer —and no cover charge for the toney but relaxed room with budget drink prices— there’s no reason this show shouldn’t shine as an example of what Music City can be, if only we’ll all become active citizens in it.
