\ TO CENTRAL \
On the final Sunday of every month from May through October certain streets in TO’s Kensington Market area are closed to automobile traffic and become a pedestrian free-for-all zone as “Pedestrian Sundays” take place from around noon till early evening.
Anyone who’s experienced the delight of being able to roam the vintage streets with buildings that somehow have survived several generations and house a wide array of interesting little shops and bars (despite recent intrusions by chain operations) wonders why this doesn’t happen more often. Like all the time!
In addition to street performances put on by the local BIA and other organizations, a lot of the local bars also serve up live music and that naturally includes little Lola at 40 Kensington Avenue, across from the corner of that street and St. Andrew Street.
Of course, Lola has live music every day anyways, and this time of year its little patio out front is usually already packed every day if the weather is nice.
For today’s event one of the room’s enduring entertainment mainstays, songwriter and balladeer John Hutt (aka Johnny Bootz to longtime readers and fans of the wiry dynamo’s bass playing with a variety of Rock/Blues bands) will be in the driver’s seat for the entertainment.
When John plays this room —as he does normally at least a couple times a week either solo or with a band— inevitably, whether it’s billed as a jam or not (he’s hosed one here Friday afternoons for years), various special guests end up joining in the musical fun. That’s a more than worthwhile bonus, because there’s a rich roster of talents in the area who are regularly featured at the little eatery often come out to take part in John’s shows.
Other area performances include Jessica Speziale as well as The St. Royals outside at the corner of Oxford Street and Augusta at starting at 2:15 p.m., plus Keelie at Coalition, a few bands at Trinity Common and Jon Foster Trio at Poetry Jazz Café (all on Augusta)
The fun runs 3-7 (or possibly quite a bit later if there’s another band later, which there probably is) and there’s never a cover charge in this down-to-earth space.
If you’re of a mind to hang around for any length of time (easy to do here, as I explained in some detail three years ago) you can be sure to meet some of the local characters who give the area its vibrancy and colour. Here’s hoping that they can continue to afford to live in the neighbourhood for many more years to come.
