\ ETOBICOKE \
A band I’ve written about several times now —most recently when they closed out last year’s Beaches International Jazz Festival— the BackTrack Motown/Soul/R&B unit always puts on a stellar show, whether as a six-piece in a club setting or, as they will be outdoors in Etobicoke today configured as a nine-plus-piece with special guest singers bringing them up to about a dozen performers on stage.
This afternoon’s 5-9 outdoor concert in the parking lot adjacent to Brickyard BBQ in Etobicoke is not just special because it’s a return to live action by a group that’s been more socially distanced than most during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.
It was inspired by the plight of one of its regular sax players (there’s usually at least three on stage with this group), Carrie Chesnutt, normally a vivacious sparkplug at any show who, in addition to being out of work because of the pandemic has been dealing with recovery from a broken femur bone after suffering a fall at home shortly after the lockdowns began.
(You can see her in action with the band at a previous live show in a video on the band’s YouTube channel, btw.)
“With her decreased mobility and little opportunity to work as a live musician it became apparent to me that she needed financial, and spiritual help,” band leader and guitarist extraordinaire Marty Zatzman explains in the promo for the show.
“Waiting until we could do an indoor event might have been in 2021. The only thing was to do an outdoor event and the sooner the better.”
He chose the Brickyard at 120 North Queen St. (corner of North Queen and The East Mall, a bit north of the entrance to Sherway Gardens Mall on The Queensway) because of a favourable dining experience and raves about the room’s ribs (as do I!) which will be on offer from the menu along with drinks and so forth.
Tickets for the limited-capacity event (only 80 people can be seated and only 30 spots were still open as of yesterday) are by donation, with $50 being requested and all proceeds going to Carrie. The promo says walk-in sales aren’t permitted (due to COVID protocols) but you can guarantee your seat by sending an e-transfer to: [email protected], where you can also send a donation in lieu of or in addition to attending live.
NOTE: If heavy rains prevent the show from happening tonight, rain date is tomorrow -call the club at 416-252-5882 or check the band’s concert page at https://backtrackband.webs.
