She may not have walked away from last weekend’s Juno Awards with a trophy, but remarkably resilient Jazz singer Alex Pangman already felt like a big winner even before her nomination for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.

As we recounted in November of 2014 upon the occasion of the release of New, the disc for which she was nominated, Pangman’s story is a nearly unbelievable tale of persistence and battling against seemingly overwhelming odds.

Pangman (also known as Alex Parker) was dubbed “Canada’s Sweetheart of Swing” after a quick rise in the spotlight following her 1999 emergence on the scene with her first album, They Say.  But her steady ascendance, which included two more albums by 2005, was starkly sidelined by lung issues arising from cystic fibrosis, a condition with which she was born.

A risky but successful double-lung transplant in 2007 incredibly not only allowed her to return to good health but she was able to resume her career with continued success, including a return to gigging with her Alleycats band and two more albums by 2013.

But when the “new” lungs began to fail that year it seemed she was destined to finally hang up her vocal chords for good —however, the plucky chanteuse instead applied for and received a second double-lung transplant that summer, and by early the next year was not only functioning normally and performing again but able to record the new New album, whose title would seem fairly self-explanatory.

(In addition to the obvious suggestion of a new beginning with the new lungs, the title also refers, Pangman has said, to the focus of the album, which, inspired by a visit to New Orleans during her recovery from the second transplant, also features players from the area, was recorded there, is a collection of Depression-era traditionals associated with the city and was created in association with a new co-producer, Andrew Gilchrist.)

For Pangman/Parker, then, seeing the record nominated for a Juno was truly just more icing on the cake —its mere existence already being a double-helping of dessert by most people’s standards.

“Although no trophy, I feel totally blessed & very grateful to be able to make music & do what I love to do,” she posted on her Facebook page following the Juno experience.

Tonight it’s back to work on the club scene as, accompanied by keyboardist Peter Hill and other members of the Alleycats ensemble, she’s doing her monthly “first-Thursday” early show at Reservoir Lounge at 52 Wellington St. E. from 7-9 p.m.
