\ PORT CREDIT-MISSISSAUGA \
Jeanine Mackie is one of three acts in steady rotation at Snug Harbour Restaurant in Port Credit, which offers a picturesque view of where the Credit River empties into Lake Ontario and a broad menu with calamari, and fish ‘n chips among the affirmed favourites. This place [which our editor last wrote about way back in 2013, coincidentally for a show Mackie was performing there] packs up on weekends and I’d heard the regulars love her.
And justifiably so. She’s a well-versed R&B/Jazz vocalist who appears perennially at The Beaches International Jazz Festival, and the Taste Of The Danforth Festival, as well as at clubs, casinos and corporate dates with her Jeanine Mackie Band, which includes several top-of-the-city players. She loves to set them loose while she just, “sinks back in the groove.”
For their performance tonight (8 p.m.) and tomorrow (noon) at this cool, slightly upmarket 160-seat room, they’re scaled down to a 4-piece and the lineup can vary with who’s available. They do time-honoured R&B/Pop tunes like “Shotgun”, “Walk On By”, “Shaky Ground”, “Fever”, “Let’s Get It On” and “RESPECT”, plus some Etta James, Sade, Bob Marley, and Funk. The playing is spotless, and Mackie —who says she was singing around the house by age 4, and professionally at 18— is a classy, engaging performer.
She could be heard in full stride on her 2012 debut album Live At The Drake, covering 11 of the aforementioned standards with bandmates Bob McAlpine (guitar), Matt Horner (keyboards), Al Cross (drums), Byron Stoehr (bass), John Johnson (saxophone) and Arturo Avales (percussion).
There’s some sizzle with the full band, between the horns, backup singers (Quisha Wint and Jarelle Christie) and her flashy, sequined dresses (reminding a bit of Michelle Pfeiffer’s role as a torch singer in “The Fabulous Baker Boys”).
On the other hand, Mackie adds the proper sadness and sweetness to acoustic/Pop arrangements of Sheryl Crow’s “Strong Enough” and Bonnie Raitt’s “I Aint Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again” on in-studio youtube clips dating back to 2014. I’m all for them putting out a CD of those sessions, as well.
But the word is, she’s fine-tuning some originals. Apparently, the multi-tasking mother of three has been writing for years (while also moonlighting as a model, actor, and TV producer). She wants to get them right, because they’re “intensely personal.”
Snug Harbour Restaurant is located at 14 Stavebank Rd. South, just south of Lakeshore Rd. And this gig is free in.
