Good reasons to be glad Laderoute’s back at Tranzac | TorontoMoon.ca 170326Su | Shows for Sunday, March 26, 2022

Michael Laderoute in 2014 -GARY 17

\ TO CENTRAL \

There are at least two good reasons to be glad that acclaimed Folk balladeer Michael Laderoute this afternoon returns to doing his monthly Sunday afternoon shows at Tranzac Club in the Annex.

The first is that his songwriting prowess —about which I’ve written several times, so won’t go into a detailed account of here but instead refer you to previous articles— makes him a delightful addition to any club’s roster and is a welcome addition to any music-lover’s plans for show outings today or any time.  While he’s no blabber-mouth, he’s also a very engaging stage presence whose dry wit makes you feel like you’re sharing secret insights that you can’t wait to tell everyone else.

The second is that, as I wrote around this time last year, Senôr Michael’s return to the last-Sunday 3-5 pm show slot in the room at 292 Brunswick Ave. sort of signifies that Spring is in the air, since he normally spends winters south in Mexico —except for one a couple of years ago when he couldn’t fly after a medical procedure.

Come to think of it, the fact that he can again board a plane at all is a third reason to be glad he’s back sharing his pithy but heartfelt and catchy tunes with us.  It means he’s healthy and that’s great because we’re in no hurry to see him cross “A River I Know” that he describes so touchingly in an award-winning song about life’s journey on his brilliant 2008 album of the same name.

I’m not sure if today he’ll be accompanied by lead guitarist Rob Fenton, who’s often at Michael’s side for these gigs.  But whether he appears as a duo or solo, his no-cover/pwyc performance today can be expected to be spirited and enchanting.

And no doubt among the audience for it in the club’s Southern Comfort Room will be fellow songwriter Steve-Paul Simms, who follows Laderoute’s show there with a two-hour stint of his own and is also well worth making the journey to hear.
