\ HAMILTON \
According to the organizers of a fundraiser happening tonight at one of Hamilton’s premier live music rooms, This Ain’t Hollywood, a popular former Hamilton radio morning host has fallen on hard times and local musicians are stepping up to help.
Having left his position in the “Steel City” aka “The Hammer” for a new career opportunity in Florida in March, popular Kerry Gray got into a car accident en route in Tennessee and while being examined in hospital there was diagnosed with multiple cancerous brain tumours and a liver problem. Still there, he apparently needs more sophisticated care and his family and he are hoping he can be transferred to his home state of Minnesota, where he could be treated at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, but first he has to pay his current Tennessee bill and for transportation costs home.
A Minnesota friend, Angell McDonnell, started a GoFundMe campaign to cover the $22,000 costs and so far nearly $17,000 has been raised, so obviously every little bit helps a lot from here on out. Tonight’s show at TAH links to that campaign and features two interesting tribute bands, presumably from the local area: Simply Hip (a Hip tribute) and Grateful Dead style Rose Garland.
Normally cover charges range from $5 to $10 at his cheeky but unpretentious room nestled in the heart of the city’s working class district near the steel mills and freight years at 345 James St. North, a block away from well-worn Barton Street. So knowing that tonight’s ducats (of which there are less than 60 left) go for $28.25 is a pretty good indication of the esteem in which locals regard Mr. Gray.
If you arrive while it’s still daylight, before the 9 p.m. showtime, take an amble (or ride the HSR bus) a few blocks east along Barton St. to Wellington St. then venture north, across the old CN railway tracks, and look left to enjoy the Jackie Washington Rotary Park, named for one of Hamilton’s longtime musical treasures, the late Jackie Washington. It’d be a good place to muse a few moments on a lovely summer eve about the importance of community in helping to maintain the wellbeing of all who participate in the music biz in its many manifestations.
