High Court County a lively place to be tonight | TorontoMoon.ca 180615Fr | Shows for Friday, June 15, 2021

High Court County @ Relish -JOANNE CLAYTON

\ TO EAST \

Land’s sakes alive!  For a bunch of “outlaw Country” roughriders these boys in High Court County sure do clean up nice when you get ‘em in the studio!

Folks who are used to seeing this high-energy group perform quite masterfully at gigs all across southern Ontario over the past couple of years will discover that listening to the two three-song eps they’ve produced is a whole new kettle of very tasty fish.

Live (as you can hear tonight when they do a show at Relish in east TO) they deliver a rip-roaring, fun mix of Country, Roots-Rock and Country-Rock covers and originals.

Fronted by smooth but assertive singer/guitarist Stephen Court, with sizzling six-stringer Arie Papernick (whose Rock heritage are obvious in his licks and fills) also prominent in the mix, they’ve described their sound in the past as “outlaw Country” —though lately I notice they calling it simply Country Rock.

Indeed in concert this is a revved up troupe, with bassist Andrew Bennett and drummer Brian Cruickshank ably measuring up to the front pair as they romp through covers of artists ranging from icons such as Merle Haggard through Johnny Cash to more modern acts like Keith Urban, Dwight Yoakam and Alan Jackson.

In the studio, however, the quartet have concocted their eps, (a debut self-titled one last year and recently the newest, Here We Go Again) with a more studied, cleaned up sound —almost too pretty on a tune like “You’re Not On The Guest List”, which to my mind should have more grit and growl than what’s presented on disc— that nevertheless also conveys both the energy and versatility of their musicianship and the smoothly constructed lyrics of their original songs.

Court has a delightfully appealing voice that can both charm and carouse and its strengths are much in evidence on this little disc on all five of the songs.  Speaking of vocals, I’d be remiss not to mention the very effective back-up singing of impressive singer Lauren Eyton Jones on “Here We Go Again (Windblown and Wasted)”.

That song is a pretty good choice for the title track of the second ep although in terms of being the band’s it has some real competition not only from “Bonfire Friday Night” (which has been getting regular airplay on radio station Country 107.3) and “Another Country Song” but also “Regrettable Mornings” and “Afternoon After”, all of which are solid new-Country/Country Rock tunes that are also all certainly radio-ready.  Impressively, the discs were self-produced and engineer Brian Hewson from Escarpment Sound Studios as well as the master-maker also deserve kudos.

You can also check out the full catalogue online, btw, on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/artist/1vXwQDlW8CRCXIo79tjU1B?si=_vrJRkYSSKKuzBFpD0udFg.

There’s no cover for tonight’s 9:30 p.m. show at funky Relish tapas bar at 2152 Danforth Ave., a block east of Woodbine Avenue subway station.  But I’d highly recommend bringing along a couple of extra bucks —not only to put something in the tip jar, which is how performers get paid here, but also to pick up a copy of the discs while you’re there.  Don’t be surprised if they becomes collector’s items.
