Hornblast brings his posse of Roots-Country stars back to Linsmore
\TORONTO EAST\
In a previous article I mentioned how the power of the lyrics in Roots songwriter Glen Hornblast’s tunes makes him a delight to listen to whether he’s solo or accompanied. But there’s no denying that it’s a whole extra dimension of Glen that blossoms forth when he’s got his full Queen Street Cowboys band behind him.
Tonight he’ll have that stellar group of backing players (including Dean Cavill on pedal steel, Phil Ciglen on electric guitar, Doug Snow on bass and Greg Lapointe on drums) with him and will add another member, Rob Murphy on electric piano, when the guys gallop back in to Linsmore Tavern, where they put on a brilliant show during a previous appearance on April 17.
One fellow musician who has previously traveled to Nashville to perform at a Roots festival and who attended the April show at Linsmore told me that the evening “completely reminded me of the best of what I saw in Nashville”.
I was similarly impressed, as was a healthy turnout of fans and fellow musicians, a couple of whom, such as harp player Ruth Jenkins and singer Mark Yan, ended up being invited up to sit in with the band for a song or two.
In addition to Hornblast’s many superlative and soulful original Roots tunes (he was a finalist in the prestigious 2013 USA Songwriting Competition), the group also has a wide repertoire of high-energy Country and Rockabilly favourites at its command. With the guys delivering them at an old-school tavern like Linsmore, with its wooden floors, furniture and ceiling struts, the vibe ended up feeling indeed like a genuine Country hoedown –the only thing missing was the straw!
No cover for tonight’s show, which runs from 9-1 in the room at 1298 Danforth Ave. a few steps from the Greenwood subway station.
