\ TO CENTRAL \
I haven’t yet attended any of the “momondays” social gatherings and live music/spoken word events put on in various cities throughout the GTA by musician and promoter Michel Neray, so I can’t really say how beneficial they might be, though the concept sounds invitingly promising.
But tonight’s musical takeover of the 120 Diner at 120 Church St. by Michel and his partner Barbara for a “kinda-sorta house concert” looks guaranteed to be an enjoyable affair based on the talent lineup.
The couple also puts on actual house concerts in their home near the Eglinton West subway station from time to time, including one coming up September 23 featuring songwriter Kevin Foster, whom they recruited from one of the momondays events.
Tonight for the 6-11:30 p.m. affair Neray himself will host and will also perform (albeit as Jacques Russell, for whatever reason) and there appears to also be a house band, since veteran stand-up bass player Abbey Leon Sholzberg is among those listed on the showcard. (I suppose ultra-versatile Abbey could be doing a solo bass set as he’s certainly capable of entertaining that way at least as much if not more so than the many electric bass players who have been doing instrumental solo shows the past few years.)
Another performer who has been getting a lot of gigs across the GTA lately but whom I haven’t yet had the opportunity to hear is Ragwax, a songwriter with a reportedly eclectic approach that incorporates elements of Jazz, Roots and Soul and into a unique sound.
Jeff Beauchamp and Trevor Owen are also part of the show, which is described in the promo as being a mix of Jazz, Blues and Tin Pan Alley. There’s no set cover for this one —it’s pay what you can— so it might be a good opportunity to get a feel for and learn more about momondays from the moman himself!
