All I can say is: it’s about time! Since I first saw Laura Hubert singing Jazz songs, circa 1999, (after disbanding her award-winning Leslie Spit Treeo Rock group) I’ve enjoyed seeing her and piano accompanist Peter Hill and various supporting players perform in a wide variety of venues, from the declassé (Mezzrow’s, Grossman’s, Lorraine’s) to the classy (Orbit Room, Ten Feet Tall, Relish) and many more in between such as The Rex, Gate 403, Cameron House and Inter Steer, to name a few.
But a room on the upscale side that’s been missing from her c.v., and that should have had her featured years ago is the Reservoir Lounge, at 52 Wellington St. E. just west of Church in downtown TO. It’s been a huge oversight on the part of whomever has been booking this very toney but sometimes somewhat snobbish, exclusivist room that does, however, feature other superlative Jazz and Blues-Jazz talents every night of the week.
But all is forgiven now, since the club has finally found a spot for Laura, albeit only as an opener and only for one night so far. That happens Tuesday May 14, from 7-9 p.m. If you’re a Hubert fan (and once you’ve heard her how can you not be) then grab six friends and go to this show and let this room know that Laura belongs here!
