\ TO CENTRAL \
Although she’s probably better known for her bongo playing and vocal backups teaming up with other artists in various Roots/Pop and soft Rock combos (not to mention her children’s music persona, Cousin Molly —voted best in that realm by City Parent Magazine!) Laura Thomas is also a pretty fine songwriter.
I discovered that first hand about three years ago when she came out to perform at one of my open mic nights and delighted us with some originals as well as a couple of covers. If you check out her website you’ll immediately hear her dulcet voice crooning the lovely title track of her album Simple Things and you can hear more when you click on the “CDs” tab.
Thomas recently moved from the Brampton area out to Cambridge, where the enterprising and energetic lady, who’s been involved with the Brampton Folk Club for a while, quickly hooked up with the local Mill Race Traditional Folk Festival people. She’s now actually the newest member of their board of directors and will be co-ordinating volunteers and merchandising for this year’s August 4-6 edition of the event in Galt.
Laura has also, she tells me, recently started up a new “Rootsy Boogie Woogie” act and last weekend debuted a freshly written song, “Boogie Woogie All Day”, at the Brampton Folk Club’s coffee-house fundraiser show. Today, however, she makes what is becoming a somewhat rare musical appearance downtown as part of a Pop trio.
Teamed up with Mike Hines and Geoff Iwamoto, she appears 5-9 on the patio of a venue I’ve not heard of before: the Duke of Devon at 66 Wellington St. West. If you go to the no-cover show see if you can persuade her to perform the new number and one or two tunes from her album. You can probably also pick up a copy of the disc and maybe find out more about the August festival while you’re at it.
