\ TO EAST \
It may not feel like it outside but technically Summer is now over, kaput, finished and done. And that means it’s time for the east TO open stage sessions known as The Lazy Cat Café to resume on the final Sunday afternoon of every month.
Today’s 3-5:30 edition of the event should be a great kickoff to the season, with one of east TO’s most popular and almost famous young songwriters, David Macmichael, appearing as the feature act.
Rather than rehash the many accolades I’ve shared in connection with mutli-instrumentalist, singer and composer Macmichael and his Danger Bees band, check out one of my previous articles, a review of their latest album from December of last year, which also contains links to other articles about him.
I’ve written about this charming monthly event several times as well, including an article from last October about last season’s debut. While that piece mentions the name of a new co-host working with songwriter Linda Lavender, I’m told that now there’s been another change and that her partner for this season will be John Glover, whom I don’t know.
The no-cover event takes place in the Bain Co-op’s community centre at 100 Bain Ave. in the Riverdale area east of Broadview and south of Danforth Ave. and which you can access most readily off Sparkhall Ave. a little west of Logan Ave. at the south side of the complex, from where you’ll see the centre’s 50-foot smokestack.
After the open stage wraps at 5:30 you can also, I’m told, check out another musical event taking place in one of the courtyards of the co-op, featuring songwriter Lynn Mantle and friends, starting at 4. The plan is that around 7 p.m. they’ll move to an adjacent area to set up a campfire and continue to serenade the solstice through the evening.
If he sticks around for some of that, David won’t stay too late, however, since he needs to get back north to Relish at 2152 Danforth Ave. a block west of Woodbine, where for several years now he’s been, along with drummer Paul Brennan, the host and anchor of the weekly Stir It Up open stage that starts there at 9:30.
