\ TO WEST \
Sidemen often get the short end of the stick in terms of public notice, usually sort of fading into the background as the limelight shines on singers, lead guitarists and the like, only occasionally taking a turn in the spotlight doing solos.
Taken for granted they may be, but players such as piano man Peter Hill and versatile saxophonist Shawn Nykwist are indispensable to the success of frontline headliners like Laura Hubert.
Creating the moods and sonic platforms that allow artists like Hubert to hit full throttle, the sidemen percolate and punctuate to weave the strands of the cradle of the sonic catapult that helps bring the moment to a zenith, enabling the star to shine and glisten against its nearly invisible strands.
Both of these two have appeared with Laura for countless shows over several years, as I’ve described on many occasions, including most recently this past July. At this point I have no doubt that the pair, who’ve also teamed up supporting various other artists over the years, can probably pretty much read each others’ minds.
Having seen that in action, it was not a big surprise to me that, when Hill started up his weekly Tuesday Duos at La Rev shows back in April —in which he appears on the 88s teamed up with another player of various instruments— it was Nywkist he chose to help kick off the series.
Like Hill, whose multitudinous assignments supporting a wide range of performers I’ve recounted in detail previously, Nykwist has, over a 20-plus year career, also appeared with a variety of artists not just here in Canada but while touring and recording with Jazz, Blues and Funk bands in France, England, Egypt, Austria, Greece, Germany, Japan, India and the U.S.A.
Locally, in addition to often backing Hubert, he’s a staple with acts such as The Hogtown Syncopators, The Shuffle Demons, Terra Hazelton, Julian Fauth and Norman Marshall Villeneuve to name just a few. He also has his own combo that’s appeared in various Jazz rooms such as Old Mill, The Rex, The Local Gest and as part of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival.
So when Shawn returns tonight to team up with Peter again for the 8-10:30 show, you can bet the eight-limbed entity they become will be spinning one impressive instrumental web of enchantment in the room at 2848 Dundas St. W. (practically on the corner of Keele).
This is a no-cover show as the proprietors of the small but welcoming and very music-friendly restaurant hope people will sample their authentic Mexican food while they’re there enjoying the entertainment. And I’m told by those who have that it’s well worth doing exactly that.
