TORONTO – The popular Roncesvalles community musical event Catweazle tonight hosts a farewell show for Native New Yorker Michael Holt, who moved to Toronto in 1998. Though broad success eluded him, he found new meaning as a neighbourhood musician and community organizer, and is now moving back to the States with nothing but gratitude – and a beautiful tribute song – for the city of Toronto, called “TORONTO.”
The event takes place at 8:00 pm tonight at the Roncesvalles United Church, 214 Roncesvalles Ave., Toronto, with appearances by celebrated Toronto artists Bob Wiseman, Don Kerr, Joan Besen (Prairie Oyster), and scores of other diverse, local acts.
In 1998 prospects were good for Michael Holt. His band The Mommyheads had achieved cult status across the U.S. and Canada, released a major label album, and garnered great contacts in the music industry. When the band broke up and Holt moved to start a new life in Toronto, he was quickly embraced by the local scene, founded a new band with The Rheostatics’ and Ron Sexsmith’s drummer Don Kerr, got a lot of gigs around the city, and finished an ambitious solo album. But recognition was elusive. His album was met with mixed reviews in Canada and silence abroad, and when his new-kid-on-the-block status wore off, he found himself just another musician struggling for attention in Toronto.
Then on tour as a solo artist, some things happened that changed Holt’s definition of success. He discovered house concerts, and the joy of connecting with small, engaged audiences. And during a European tour in support of the Transition movement – a global effort of people building sustainability in their own towns and neighbourhoods – he encountered the idea of hyper-localism.
So, rather than continuing to pursue international or even city-wide recognition, Holt started focusing on what he could do in his own neighbourhood and music community. He wrote string arrangements for his friends’ shows and albums, helped organize benefits and neighbourhood festivals, contributed music to local community groups, and played at small clubs down the street from where he lived. He founded Toronto House Culture (an umbrella group for in-home cultural gatherings across the city), and co-founded three popular events, all of which will continue in his absence: Catweazle (a community open stage in Roncesvalles Village), Soozapallooza (a house concert series in The Annex), and the Festival of House Culture (a city-wide extravaganza of music, arts, food, and conversation, all in people’s homes). He began pursuing gender and cultural diversity at everything he organized, and is writing a book on the fulfillment available to both musicians and the public through involvement in small-scale, local music.
Now that his parents need live-in care (his father turns 100 this year), Holt is moving back to the States on July 1st. Although he didn’t find fame and fortune here, he has nothing but gratitude for the city of Toronto. Its social openness, multiculturalism, and strong community focus made it a perfect place to incubate the above mentioned projects and ideas, and find out what it means to truly be a locally engaged musician. He’s expressed these sentiments in a tribute song for the city called, simply, “Toronto,” released as a free digital download on his site, michaelholtmusic.com.
