\ BURLINGTON \
Some longtime readers may, like me, initially be a little confused when they hear that “SEBB is hosting a Blues-Rock jam tonight at Black Swan.” They may assume that the host of the Monday night open stage at the Danforth Ave. tavern in TO East, Sebastian Agnello (aka Seb to fans and friends) is adding another night to his schedule there. After all, in addition to being an acoustic balladeer/protest singer as he demonstrates Mondays, he’s highly renowned as an ace Rock/Country electric Les Paul guitarist and the Blues comes easily to him as well, when he has a mind for it.
But in fact the SEBB in question is a different one and so is the location! For as residents of Burlington know, there is also a Black Swan Pub & Grill in that sleepy suburb, at 4040 Palladium Way, which, like its TO Black Swan Tavern namesake, also features regular live music.
And tonight hosting the Thursday jam there —for the second time this month in what I’m told is likely to be a regular rotation— is the other SEBB: high-powered trio the Screamin’ Evil Blues Band, fronted by ace Telecaster slinger and lead singer Keith Danby.
This group has been busy building up a solid rep in bars across Ontario over the past five years, playing a wide range of venues in all parts of “The Six” as well as in 905 locales like Richmond Hill, Streetsville, Pickering, Port Credit, Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton and Mississauga as well as forays into Erin, Brantford, Gravenhurst and more.
I haven’t had a chance to hear them beyond the videos you can see from a link on their very amusing and high-energy website. (Scroll to the very bottom where the Copyright info is for a taste of their always present Rock’n’roll sense of humour!)
Known as SEBB by their followers and in their own descriptions of the band, the group has an earthy, gritty sort of “dirty Blues Rock” approach to covering tunes like “Talk Too Much”, “Red House”, “Crossroads” and “Rocky Mountain Way” among a legion of others. They deliver them with an expertly applied grungy edge that makes them urgent again and it shows in audience reactions.
A number of the videos seem to include various guest artists (or sometimes audience members) sharing the stage with them so I’d guess from that plus their fun-loving attitude —and that fact that they’re back in the hosting role already after a May 4 debut— that they’ll be pretty accommodating to jammers who come out for the 8-12 event.
