Sin City’s heart is on Radio display tonight
\TORONTO DOWNTOWN\
I’ve written on several occasions in the past about high-energy party band The Sin City Boys, a Tex-Mex/vintage Pop Rock outfit anchored by dynamic, versatile and personable guitarist/singer Kevin Jollimore.
When I brought the group into Linsmore Tavern a couple of months ago as a basically last-minute fill-in for a cancellation spot, I knew they’d do well even without time to fully promote the show –they have a strong following in the east end of TO as well as downtown (they’ve been doing a monthly Sat. matinee at Graffiti’s in Kensington Market for years) and the hip west end (they packed Dakota Tavern for a show celebrating their 20th anniversary last year).
But on the holiday weekend last-minute gig at Linsmore not only did they bring in their own crowd, they also wowed the regulars. Club operator Ryan Mangano told me “that one was a home run” and several times since then when asking me to recommend bands for open dates has added “…if you can bring me another band like Sin City Boys that would be great!”
The band features many talented players, but at its heart is Jollimore, who also does a weekly Friday afternoon show featuring himself and a variety of other players at Graffiti’s –and who is an accomplished actor to boot, most recently portraying Richard Nixon in the “Elvis and Dick” theatrical production that had a run at Tarragon Theatre in July.
Tonight the many-faceted talents of Jollimore will on display at a new west-downtown bar known as Bar Radio that seems to be aiming to join Dakota in the big leagues based on its talent roster since opening about three months ago.
Booker Samantha Martin has close ties with Dakota (she was or is a longtime server there and performs there regularly with her Samantha Martin & The Haggard Country band) and she’s bringing in seasoned veteran artists like David Gavin Baxter to the new room and giving them rotating monthly residencies for various nights of the week to show what they can do.
This evening kicks off Jollimore’s stint on Wednesdays in September and would make for an excellent occasion on which to check out this place at 615 College St. near Clinton. Show runs 9-12 and cover is pay-what-you-can. I would guess Jollimore will also have copies of some of the excellent recorded material released by his band, a worthy investment for you collection and delight.
