\ PICKERING \
Things have been rather up in the air at West Shore Bar & Grill in Pickering since the Juggernaut Jam Band decided to move its successful Sunday jam from that rather casually operated venue to the more focused Edge room in Ajax at the end of last August.
Two different groups have had a go at replacing the Juggernaut at West Shore but for one reason or another neither appears to have worked out. It may have something to do with the fact that the club doesn’t seem to take promoting its live music very seriously. When it was still functional the room’s website had no mention of live entertainment and their Facebook page is only updated sporadically –it’s pretty much left up to the bands to do their own promotion for the shows.
While one of the groups that took over the reins of the jam, Enzo and the Surf Riders, made some effort to promote it, frontman Enzo Simone decided after a few weeks to hand over the reins to another group, fronted by Paul Storm, which turned out to be completely inept in that regard.
Fortunately the third group to take on the show, starting this afternoon at 3, is a promotional behemoth that has a successful track record running weekend afternoon jams not far away from where West Shore is located at 877 Bayly Street.
Jim Cornell’s Still Sunday has developed a very successful Saturday afternoon Blues matinee series at The Loaded Dog in Scarborough over the past year or so, as members and fans of the group have more than made up for the fact that the Dog, despite its many attractions, is also quite lame when it comes to promoting its live music shows.
Still Sunday is also appearing at shows all across the GTA these days as Cornell’s own guitar and singing skills, combined with the awesome six-string prowess, reputation and star-appeal of band member Earl Johnson of MOXY fame, has been wowing audiences wherever they go –and word is getting out.
Cornell says his version of the 3-7 jam will be “acoustic or electric” depending on what performers want to do and it’s also an all-ages affair. With Johnson also part of the Zone Music School based in Durham Region, there should be a steady stream of young players coming out to supplement the veterans who already count themselves part of the following that appears at pretty much every Still Sunday show these days.
So prospects look promising for this event to finally get re-established and make a strong complement to the Juggernaut event, which runs 5-9.
