Stronger at 5-year mark, Kayt Lucas takes a harder name | TorontoMoon.ca 170325Sa | Shows for Sat. March 25, 2022

Kayt Lucas -KEVIN LAMB

\ TO CENTRAL \

When a tree starts out as a sapling its limbs are soft and somewhat vulnerable, tender but easily torn.  But as it grows it gathers strength and rigidity, its central tendril eventually becoming not just a wavering, windblown mass of fibres but a solid trunk of wood.

Perhaps that’s why the fifth year celebration of a marriage is regarded as the “wood” anniversary.  And while I doubt that songwriter Kayt Lucas had this in mind exactly when she decided to rename her band on the occasion of hitting that milestone, it nevertheless seems very appropriate.

For tonight, as Lucas celebrates hitting that five-year mark, the mandolin-playing singer is also turning a page in the group’s history by rechristening what was the Kayt Lucas Band as the new Kayt and the Hard Folks.

The formidable femme in fact describes her original music, influenced by a variety of Rootsy strains, as “Hard-Folk,” a genre label which near as I can tell is her own invention.  Regardless, it seems indeed to describe the strong and gutsy approach to performance that I’ve heard from her and the backing 5-piece on a couple of her videos.

As a performer Kayt learned theatricality both from the sidelines and as a feature attraction herself.  For some years she did rigging work for big budget shows and is also both a former dancer and an aerialist performer!

The five other musicians who currently back her as part of the band are Michael Menegon (who’s an original member) on percussion, vocals and guitar; Joel Merzetti on acoustic guitar, keys and vox; Paul Chalmers on electric six-string; Richard Begley on bass; and drummer Donn Dixon.

Kayt and the band seem to identify strongly with the community based around the Church of The Messiah (250 Avenue Road near Dupont) where tonight’s celebratory show takes place and in fact tonight’s party will also include a set by the church’s choir, conducted by Sarah John.  Other special guests include performers Jee Jee, Mayank Thipathi, Nick Yaksich, Minas Hatzigiannatzoglou, Sydney Delong, Gus Apostolous and Jennifer Noble.

I’d also expect to see several of a talented roster of former and occasional guest members of the band from the past five years come out to help celebrate.  In addition to some already named, that could include Bill Galloway (original member, regular guest), Paul Kehayas, Mark Galloway, Harriet Hume, Keary Scanlon, Loren Hicks, Bill Coleman, Angela MacDonald Petkovic, Chris Stephen, Paul Smith, Monica Serodio and Frank Patrick.

The late great guitarist Roy Buna was another original member and in fact, along with Galloway, appears on the KLB group’s debut recording Tornado Nursery, which you can purchase online as well as a subsequent album, Resonant Heart.

The purchase portal also offers a couple of different merch items (too bad that doesn’t yet include a poster-sized version of the remarkable Tornado Nursery cover painting!) and also a $1 mp3 single, “Lost Ones,” that the group cut for the PTSD Awareness Canada organization.  Proceeds from that, (which also has an associated YouTube live video) go to help that charity to raise awareness of how post-traumatic distress can affect victims, who are usually the very people others rely upon in times of crisis. “Even heroes feel the pain,” she sings with conviction.

There’s no fixed cover for tonight’s early affair, which runs from 7 till 10, but you can make donations to help cover costs and I’d expect the opportunity will also be there to purchase copies of the albums and other merch.
