Timothy’s doesn’t mind sharing musical wealth created by others

\ ETOBICOKE SOUTH \

It’s a lucky thing for patrons of Timothy’s Pub on Brown’s Line in South Etobicoke that other club owners in the west Etobicoke and Port Credit area don’t try to take the same high-handed attitude towards controlling bands that appear in their rooms as does owner Tim Brem.

Otherwise they wouldn’t be enjoying today’s excellent matinée show with Danny B, who brings in the Blues Hall Of Fame-listed group that recently celebrated its first year anniversary performing Saturday afternoons at nearby Blue Goose Tavern, along with, no doubt, some of the local followers he’s created there in that time.

Brem, who always displayed sort of a Jekyll-Hyde persona when I dealt with him over the course of about a decade a long time ago, can be the nicest and most reasonable guy you’d ever want to know. But then on some days and in some ways there are peculiarities of attitude that defy logic and aggravate the hell out of those who otherwise enjoy associating with him.

He’s tried very hard, some musicians say —and with some success— to convince some of the bands that appear in his room to not also perform at other clubs in the Alderwood-Long Branch area —at all. While anyone can understand that you don’t want the band being featured at a place around the corner tonight also trying to bring the same crowd out to your place tomorrow, the idea of getting groups to “blackball” other area clubs entirely is not only arrogant, it’s also foolhardy and ultimately self-defeating.

Someone who lives in the area that sees a band they like at, say, Southside Johnny’s, may well go out to a nearby room such as Timothy’s, the Goose or Maple Leaf House to catch them again on another weekend. That actually benefits everyone, because it keeps customers in the neighbourhood and helps to create a scene. It’s how a “Club District” becomes just that. But the concept seems to be lost on Brem, who apparently believes that the fact he’s been there nigh on two decades should allow him the right to set policy for the entire area.

Not that he’s really been able to do so. A group like Freedom Train, for example —which was introduced to the area at Southside Johnny’s several years ago— continues to perform there, albeit very occasionally these days at Brem’s request.  But they are very much in evidence in nearby Port Credit, where they’re regular attractions at both Roc ‘n’ Doc’s and two or three times a month at the newer Lake Affect (where, in fact, they appear this afternoon).

Along with less imperially-minded owners like Terry at the Goose and John at Southside, who don’t seem to have a problem being part of a circuit rather than living on their own planet, no doubt this afternoon Tim’s patrons will feel the same way as Danny B brings his inimitable brand of showmanship —combined with the superb musicality of guitarist Brian Gauci, bassist Uli Bohnet and piano-man Michael Keys— to the pub at 344 Brown’s Line from 5-8.
