One of the artists that Moon subscribers will be seeing articles both about and by in the Vault section of the torontomoon.ca website in coming days is singer Dee Flat, about whom I’ve been writing for nearly twenty years. It’s hard to believe that in all that time she hardly seems to have aged at all, so these days she doesn’t look all that different from the way she did in the photo I took of her more than a dozen years ago, before she moved to the Niagara Falls area in 2002.
Prior to that, while fronting her own Dee Flat and the Benz band and also Gino Scarpelli’s self-titled Scarpelli for some time, she also used to pen regular articles for this magazine, then known as to-nite.
As I wrote in a piece about her in April of 2003 (the last time I’m aware of her returning to the city for a gig with the group she was then part of, 4 Play) the “statuesque and sultry blond bombshell” was “renowned not only for her singing but for her hilarious stage patter.” Although it’s been a long time since I’ve seen her perform live I have no doubt not much has changed in that regard either. But tonight is a great opportunity to find out for sure as she returns to perform in the city for the first time in about ten years fronting her latest band, Dunn, at Southside Johnny’s on Lakeshore Blvd. W. in south Etobicoke. -Gary 17
