Some people have commented to me recently that “Country music is making a comeback” and on the face of it that certainly seems to be true. With the opening in TO of two new bars offering a Country vibe and live music plus an increasing number of “alt-Country” acts popping up here and there —not to mention the wild success of groups like Johnny Cash tribute We Walk The Line— the genre seems to be healthier than it has in some time. And soon you’ll be reading more about that scene as a new Moon correspondent begins penning profiles and reviews. (BTW, I’m also interested in having other subscribers do some writing for the publication about the music that gets them excited.)
But there are some bars where County isn’t making a comeback because it never went away! One such is The Corral in Oshawa, which has been open at 433 Simcoe St. South for over 30 years and features live Country acts three nights a week: Friday and Saturday, as you’d expect, and for some mysterious reason every Tuesday as well, while the rest of the week it’s closed except for special events. Usually it’s the same bands doing 9-1 shows all three nights, with a Country DJ between sets. That’s also the case this week as the Paul Nathan Band appears. Born in Oklahoma and raised in Sudbury, he sounds well qualified to deliver the “blue collar Country” his Facebook band page promises. -Gary 17, torontomoon.ca
